Hy-Vee, Target, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Coborns, Cub Foods, Shopko (Success!), Home Depot, JC Penney, etc. We would also like to see a downtown Madison development program for small and specialty retail. Anything that can offer more products at a competitive price. It will help keep individuals shopping in our community and stop the slide of sales tax revenue caused by individuals leaving our community t
o shop at the large retailers in Sioux Falls or Brookings. We also believe it would help eliminate some online shopping by offering more variety in town. Convenience, variety, and affordability is our goal! There are numerous studies that show that communities that have a "neighboring" big box retailer lose more percentage of sales over a 5 or 10 year period than those that do not have a big box retailer. The fact is, to stop the lose of sales tax revenue and to encourage local shopping, we need a new large retail and or grocery store. We have suffered from stagnant growth for the last 20 years in Madison, SD. Without some bold moves, we will continue down this path of decline. A big box retailer could foster smaller businesses to "spring" up in a strip mall near the new big box store. It could eventually grow into more traffic in town for events, leading to another Hotel, Events Center, or a sit-down national "chain" restaurant (think Applebees or Perkins). It will most certainly bring more people to town and possible help foot traffic downtown. Yes, we believe that Madison could become a destination for shopping and entertainment for all of us living in Lake, Moody, and Minor counties. Let's make this happen!
