With the support of Obihiro Mayor Sunagawa and Madison Mayor Cieslewicz, Madison Sister Cities Inc. was created in 2006. Madison and Obihiro are both located at 43 north latitutde and share many common attributes. Obihiro is nestled between two major mountain ranges while Madison is situated between two major lakes (Mendota & Monona) These natural attributes create an abundance of agricultural products.
Since 2006, Madison-Obihiro Sister Cities, Inc. (MOSC) and Obihiro Koryu Association (OKA) have participated in a variety of activities. Study tours focusing on mental health, agriculture, environmental concerns, veterinary and agriculture research have resulted in over 300 people from Obihiro coming to Madison. MOSC has hosted a variety of cultural events highlighting Obihiro agricultural products such as: smoked tofu, dried salmon flakes, baked goods, soft cheese and many more.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Obihiro Veterinary & Agricultural University have exchanged faculty, collaborated on research and have published over 10 joint papers as well as providing opportunities for students and faculty to come to the Madison or Obihiro campuses.
Since 2006, MOSC & OKA have emphasized programs on education, agriculture, community mental health, senior family care, wellness and much more.
