Eleanor.
What can I say about this mammoth Mule, except that she is a beacon of light here on our sanctuary. She reminds me daily, that what I do has a purpose. She has a grounding energy that calms me when the world gets chaotic. She can speak to me without saying a word.
Eleanor’s life was not always happy. Our paths would cross in the Fall of 2012. She was a work Mule, used by the Amish in Pennsylvania, and then thrown away. Just a tool that was not useful to them any longer. She was sold at auction and ended up a kill pen, tagged and destined for slaughter. I had never saved a Mule before. But she had my heart and I was determined. With the help of a few good people, we were able to secure payment for her, and a 30 day quarantine barn while I frantically searched for a shipper to bring her all the way to MN. No easy feat. By the grace of God and our small network, we not only did it, but we also saved a Thoroughbred mare that would travel with her. When Eleanor arrived, I was in awe of her. Absolutely smitten. But she did not trust people. I could handle her but she did not know love. It was clear that up until now, no human had given her affection. She had been a tool to be used and put away. Over the course of several years, she settled in here, and her and I bonded. She will now come running to me, she will rest her huge head in my arms as I scratch her ears, and she knows she is home. Forever. The fate she would have suffered is unimaginable to me. She is so gentle and such a beautiful soul.
We recently had a church group ask us to come take some photos for their virtual Christmas program. I was not sure how Eleanor would react to having kids around her and parents taking photos, so I just said “we will see, maybe she won’t let us”.
So we took it slow, and Eleanor was such a trooper for these kids. It made my heart swell.
I was sent this picture, and it brought tears to my eyes. It touched me so much.
This is why we rescue.
For Eleanor.
