The public is invited to a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for a new section of RiverLands Trail.

The Trust for Public Land and the City of Smyrna invite you to join us at the river as we celebrate the opening of a new section of the RiverLands Showcase Trail at Riverview Park.
This new paved, multi-use trail is a tangible step toward the larger Chattahoochee RiverLands vision—a 100-mile network of connected parks, trails, and river access that will bring more people and communities closer to the Chattahoochee.
This milestone has been made possible through the leadership, collaboration, advocacy, and investment of many partners across the region. We hope you will join us to celebrate what this collective effort is accomplishing.
The ceremony will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. On-street and metered parking will be available nearby at Riverview Landing.

9/10/2026 Fourteen year old Simeon Hembree is in training with Chuck Hoskins as the newest addition to The River Line Historic Area's Nickajack Creek Water Collection Crew. Collection points are at the Nickajack Creek pedestrian bridge and the Discovery Blvd bridge. The photos complement the posted written procedures below.

July 11, 2026 , Sat. @1 PM. Speaker & book signing. Learn about our historic Cobb County Chattahoochee River Line Battlefield! Author of "Walking the Line", Dr. Lawrence Krumenaker, will be speaking at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. "Walking the Line" books will be available to purchase on July 11 or online at: https://www.hermograph.com/indexBW.htm
The book includes the 6 mile Chattahoochee River Line Civil War defense line with its exclusive Shoupade forts bordering the Chattahoochee River extending from Vinings to Discovery Park at the River Line. The 80 acre Discovery Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest in tact remains from the entire Chattahoochee River Line Battlefield.

I will be giving a public book talk about the Atlanta Campaign, the various defense (and offense) line during the Siege of Atlanta, and most importantly, where the lines are on today's Atlanta area landscape and what's still left to see. I will be signing books at well. July 11 (Saturday) at 1 PM at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. It's FREE! Come and listen and say hello!

6/18/2026 Historic Shoupade Park. This is the last Cobb County Parks scheduled volunteer work day prior to summer break. Super volunteer, Ron Wendt, spent 2 hours single-handedly trimming vegetation from the 2 gun artillery redan to enhance the visitor's view of the fortifications (see Ron in photos), while Roberta focused on removing wisteria vines from the field outside the fence. Cobb staff, Emily & Chase, focused on their routine maintenance including the recent rehabilitation of the wisteria field. Mowing the wisteria has transformed the park aesthetics tremendously!

May 16 & June 20, 2026 There's progress with the fence-clearing project at Hooper-McWilliams Cemetery. If you can join our volunteers at the next work session on Sat., 9/12/2026 from 10am to 11am, please signup by email [email protected].
In 2025 volunteers tackled an overgrown forest entanglement of vines, bushes and trees engulfing the chain link fence separating the cemetery from Georgia Power property. Photos from the most recent 2 work sessions show Lisa and George clearing vegetation revealing more fence visibility, but it may take another year to complete the project.
