Lynchburg Beacon of Hope

Lynchburg Beacon of Hope What is the purpose of the Beacon of Hope? MENTORING PROGRAMS which diligently work to encourage students to apply AND leverage all available resources.

The mission of Lynchburg Beacon of Hope is to inspire Lynchburg’s youth to pursue post-secondary education or training, invest in their potential, and equip them to become contributing individuals to the betterment of our community. To instill in ALL Lynchburg City Public School students the aspiration to pursue AND to provide them with the tools and resources to attain a post-secondary education.

To provide college opportunities for those would not be able to attend college otherwise

To change the culture in the Lynchburg community to a PreK-16 division

To create a stream of qualified/educationally prepared talent for the greater Lynchburg workforce

To ensure that all children who graduate from Lynchburg City Schools are prepared for the next step in life: 4 year college, 2 year college, technical / community/trade school, industry certification

To improve the quality of life in our community by investing in our most precious resource—our children—who are our future

To compile and disseminate data on current and continuing post-secondary education of Lynchburg’s student

What are the components the Beacon of Hope? FUTURE CENTERS housed in both LCS High Schools (staffed, maintained, and funded by the Beacon of Hope) which provide resources on financial aid and college admissions for ALL LCS students, guidance on local and federal financial aid. Programs in the Elementary and Middle Schools that plant the seeds of COLLEGE ATTAINABILITY for younger students. Ultimately, SCHOLARSHIP opportunities above and beyond last dollar earned to level the playing field and get students onto post secondary education. PARTNERSHIPS with our local businesses to provide funding and internship opportunities, so that the intellectual capital that is created through the Beacon does not “leak away” from Lynchburg after students earn post secondary degrees.

A huge thank you to First National Bank for nearly 10 years of partnership with Beacon of Hope!

Since 2023, they’ve also invested in students through our Summer Internship Program, hosting at least two interns each June and giving them a firsthand look at careers in banking, professional growth, and community impact.

We’re grateful for partners who don’t just support students...they create opportunities for them to learn, grow, and envision their futures right here in Lynchburg!

A huge thank you to Mission Thrift - Rivermont, Mission Thrift - Waterlick, and Mission Thrift - Forest, and their shoppers for supporting Lynchburg Beacon of Hope through Mission Thrift’s Round Up campaign earlier this spring!

Every customer who chose to round up their purchase helped invest in local students. As our Summer Internship Program progresses this month, we’re especially grateful for Mission Thrift’s partnership in helping interns prepare for success through both financial support and professional attire.

Thank you for believing in Lynchburg’s next generation!

Last week, we welcomed students, families, alumni, and supporters to the for our annual Scholarship Dinner.

One of the evening’s highlights was hearing from five Lynchburg City Schools alumni currently attending college. They shared honest insights about campus life, overcoming challenges, finding community, and making the most of the college experience.

The evening concluded with the presentation of scholarships, made possible through the generosity of donors who believe in the potential of Lynchburg’s students.

Congratulations to our scholarship recipients, and thank you to the community that continues to invest in their futures!

Earlier this month, we celebrated our Stay Close, Go Far (SCGF) scholars graduating from Central Virginia Community College.

Whether they’re continuing their education at a four-year college or launching careers they’ve worked hard to build, one thing is clear: they did it! And we couldn’t be more proud. Congratulations!

Last week, we celebrated our E.C. Glass seniors as they locked in college and career commitments, scholarships, and next-step plans. From morning recognitions to afternoon games, music, and good food, Decision Day was pure joy for the Hilltoppers.
