The academy will offer speakers, classes and courses on a variety of topics important to the effective operation of a nonprofit; examples include starting a nonprofit, state and federal registration laws, tax and insurance issues, budgeting, marketing, fundraising, and evaluating effectiveness. The academy project grew out of the July 28 summer workshop of the Council of United Way Agencies, and h

as been supported by Central Virginia Community College. Lillian Bailey, coordinator of the Tidewater Academy of Nonprofit Excellence in Suffolk, and Christine Nardi, executive director of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence in Charlottesville, spoke to thirty area nonprofit leaders and volunteers that day on the many positive effects that an academy or center of nonprofit excellence can have on a community. Listeners were enthused, and began work on creating a similar institution here. CVCC Representatives Dr. John Capps, Dr. Ruth Hendrick, and Francie Dye have been very involved and very helpful. We expect classes to be held on the CVCC campus.
