There are a lot of misconceptions about who can become a foster parent, and you might be surprised to learn that fostering could be possible for you.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to have all the answers. What matters is having a safe, stable home and a willingness to show up for a child who needs you.

🍦 What does Treatment Foster Care have to do with Department of Social Services?

As a Treatment Foster Care agency, HumanKind is licensed to provide a network of foster homes to any of Virginia’s over 130 Departments of Social Services offices. We work closely with DSS teams across the state to care for children and support families.

And while there’s plenty of serious work that comes with that partnership, we love getting to step away from the paperwork and make time to connect, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company!

Yesterday, we had a wonderful time visiting Campbell County DSS for an ice cream social. 🍨

Thank you to Thea, Campbell County’s Family Services Supervisor, for being such a kind, welcoming host, and to everyone who stopped by to enjoy a sundae and some good conversation!

Our First Night Bags program is accepting new toy donations! 🧸

When a child enters foster care, we want their first night to feel as calm and comfortable as possible. Our First Night Bags program provides children with a backpack filled with comforting and essential items to help them feel cared for during a difficult transition.

We’re currently collecting new toys to add a little joy and a sense of normalcy to their first night.

Your donation can help a HumanKind foster child feel seen, valued, and reminded that they are cared for. ❤️

MYTH VS. FACT

❌ A common misconception about foster care is that you must be married to be a foster parent.

✅ The TRUTH is that single individuals can make wonderful foster parents. The key to being a successful foster parent is a strong support system, which may include friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors.

💙 A loving foster family does not look one specific way; people from all walks of life are encouraged to open their hearts and homes to children in need.

The number is bigger than most people realize.

1 in 17 children in the United States will enter foster care at some point during their childhood.

That means foster care isn’t someone else’s problem. It’s our community. It’s our schools, churches, neighborhoods, and families. And it means there are children all around us who may need a safe place to land.

Behind this statistic is a child who deserves stability, connection, and someone who says, “You’re home here, and you matter to us.”

You don’t have to be perfect to make a difference. You just have to be willing to show up.

A haircut is so much more than "just a haircut".

In Virginia foster care, foster parents need DSS approval before taking a child for a haircut. And there’s a reason for that. Hair is tied to so much of who we are—our identity, culture, self-expression, and even how we see ourselves. For a family navigating the foster care process, all those things deeply matter.

Imagine sitting in a shop chair, and in the midst of so much change, having your voice heard and being cared for. What looks like a haircut from the outside can become a moment of trust, dignity, connection, and belonging.

It’s an opportunity for a foster parent to connect with a child who is just getting to know this new person in their life.

We are incredibly grateful to Kelly and the Lynchburg Sports Clips team for donating free haircuts to every foster child entering care in our Lynchburg area. ❤️
