1 in 17 children in the United States will enter foster care at some point during their childhood.

That means foster care isn’t someone else’s problem. It’s our community. It’s our schools, churches, neighborhoods, and families. And it means there are children all around us who may need a safe place to land.

Behind this statistic is a child who deserves stability, connection, and someone who says, “You’re home here, and you matter to us.”

A haircut is so much more than "just a haircut".

In Virginia foster care, foster parents need DSS approval before taking a child for a haircut. And there’s a reason for that. Hair is tied to so much of who we are—our identity, culture, self-expression, and even how we see ourselves. For a family navigating the foster care process, all those things deeply matter.

Imagine sitting in a shop chair, and in the midst of so much change, having your voice heard and being cared for. What looks like a haircut from the outside can become a moment of trust, dignity, connection, and belonging.

It’s an opportunity for a foster parent to connect with a child who is just getting to know this new person in their life.

We are incredibly grateful to Kelly and the Lynchburg Sports Clips team for donating free haircuts to every foster child entering care in our Lynchburg area. ❤️

Our Lynchburg office is growing! 💙 With more than 70 children currently placed in our foster homes, we've expanded into a second building to make room for our incredible case management team.

Now, we're working on creating a welcoming visitation room—a space where children and their families can connect and make meaningful memories together during supervised visits.

We're looking for new toy donations for ages 0–18! Think board games, LEGO sets, baby toys, sensory toys, card games, dolls, cars, and other activities the whole family can enjoy together.

What started as a simple neighborhood Facebook post from our Richmond Program Manager, Lee Turco, unfolded into something truly beautiful. 💙

Recently, our Richmond office welcomed a few emergency placements in care. Assessing their needs, Lee reached out to her neighborhood Facebook group hoping to gather a few clothing items for the kids. The response of the community response was overwhelming.

One of those who stepped up was Mike Ireson with Main Street Bank. He shared our needs with his coworker, Joe Jacquot, who chose to dedicate his one-year charitable donation to HumanKind Foster Care. This generosity resulted in a $2,000 donation to support children entering foster care.

As the team continued to get to know Joe, he shared that he is a former foster parent who welcomed teenagers into his home and has spent years advocating for youth in foster care in Kentucky.

We're incredibly grateful for a community that continues to show up for children and families. It's a beautiful reminder that even the simplest act of kindness can grow into something that changes lives. 💙

💙 Today, we're highlighting a need in our Richmond office.

We've had several recent emergency foster care placements, and our First Night Bags room is getting low on supplies. When children enter foster care, they often come with very few belongings. Our First Night Bags help provide essentials and a few comfort items to help them feel cared for during a difficult transition.

We're working to restock our supply room and are currently in need of new, unused items. If you'd like to help, we've put together an Amazon Wishlist with our most-needed items:
