This episode of Appalachia’s Happiest Places centers on 24 Hours of Appalachia, an endurance rally built to bring real economic impact to rural Eastern Kentucky. But the real story isn’t the vehicles—it’s the people.

Episode 3 of Appalachia’s Happiest Places premieres at 6pm ET tonight (NOW) on our YouTube channel.

Today was an incredibly fulfilling and impactful day as we filmed episodes 3 and 4 of Appalachia’s Happiest Places in Lee County, Kentucky. The focus of these episodes was a bit different from what we usually highlight, while we love showcasing the beautiful and joyous aspects of the Appalachian region, we also felt it was crucial to address the significant challenges the area faces, especially in the wake of the devastating flooding in Lee and Owsley counties.

Our goal is not only to raise awareness about the struggles these communities are experiencing but also to show the deep love and pride that the people of Lee County have for their home. By sharing their stories, we hope to ignite a sense of urgency and encourage support for the region, which needs help now more than ever.

One of the most powerful moments of the day was when the women currently in recovery received their very own cameras and laptops. These incredible individuals have been working hard in their recovery programs, and today, they were given the tools to apply the skills they’ve been learning in their weekly training sessions. Not only will they use these tools to contribute to the filming of the series, but they’ll also gain valuable experiences that will help them build careers in the media industry after they graduate from their programs. It’s such a rewarding feeling to know that the project we’re working on is providing these women with an opportunity to succeed both professionally and personally.

As we continue to film and share these powerful stories, we are also encouraging viewers to support the flood victims in Lee and Owsley counties. If you’re interested in contributing, you can donate through the Backroads of Appalachia Google page, where there’s a dedicated button for donations.
