Part 4…

After being at his bedside for 6 days, I had to return back to my own family in Minneapolis. I had planned to check in with my family, attend my daughter’s school holiday party and then come back down to Luverne the next morning.

It was Friday, October 31st and we took my daughter out trick-or-treating with a friend. The whole time, I was feeling very unsettled and couldn’t relax.

Once they finished up their candy route, we headed back to our house. My daughter and husband fell asleep almost instantly. But I couldn’t stop thinking.

I had been texting with my aunt and cousin, asking for updates on Taylor. My cousin texted me at 11:41pm and said “He’s really struggling to breathe.”

At that point, I made the decision to grab my purse and get back in the car to start the 3 hour drive back to Luverne.

At 12:25am she texted me again and said his breathing had calmed down a little and he wasn’t struggling so hard.

Our texts stopped shortly after this.

It was raining really hard, I was crying, and half falling asleep so I decided to turn on one of Taylor’s favorite songs and blare it as loud as possible while I drove.

As soon as I turned the music on, I turned my head to the right and sitting there in the passenger seat of my car, was Taylor.

I thought I might be hallucinating. But I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. There he was. His HEALTHY, goofy, self. Sitting there, smiling at me as if we were on a road trip - just hanging out, doing normal sibling things.

It must have been 30 seconds before I turned my head to look back at the road. But it was then, that I knew that my brother had finally left this Earth.

In that moment, I had confirmation that he was back to his healthy, strong, hilarious self. No more pain, no more suffering.

But also… no more Taylor, here on Earth.

Part 3…

They pulled into the driveway after the 9+ hour drive.

It took a while for Taylor to get out of the car.

He so badly wanted to be independent and do it on his own. But his brain wouldn’t tell his legs that it was time to move.

I can only imagine how it would feel to desperately want to lift your legs to just get up and walk, but as much as your mind is telling your body to do something - it just won’t. It’s like the circuit is broken and there’s no coming back.

Then, pair that on top of having an immense about of bone pain.

No one should ever have to experience the pain that my brother did. No one.

Once my parents were finally able to get Taylor inside, he sat at the kitchen table.

The pizza box sitting in front of him. The smell of the buffalo chicken permeating the house.

We got him a plate and put a piece in front of him.

He stared at that piece of pizza for a long time. It felt like 20 minutes. I couldn’t tell if he was contemplating how he was going to actually eat it, since he hadn’t eaten solid food in quite some time, or if he was staring at that pizza, wondering if this was the last time he would take in that smell.

Eventually, he pushed the plate away and decided he was ready to lay down.

I think that’s the moment when it really hit me. This is it. My brother will take his last breath as a 34 year old, leaving behind his family and this life that we’ve only ever known with him in it.

It was so finite. So concrete. No more grey. No more scans. No more chemo. No more options.

All of those things were just… done.

Part 2..

Taylor’s treatment was tough. Real tough.

When I found out about his diagnosis, I thought, “I’ll help him through this. I’ve been through this and he’s a heck of a lot tougher than I am. He’s got this.”

But our course of treatment was vastly different.

My plan of action was chemo, surgery, radiation. His started out with a lengthy hospital stay and chemo around the clock. And then more chemo. Chemo into his spine (lumbar punctures), biopsies taken so many times, an incessant amount of scans, more chemo, lots of pills, and more chemo. And the hospital stays… the amount of days he spent in the hospital added up to more days than he spent at home, with his family, and sleeping in his own bed.

It felt like it would never end. And yet, he remained hopeful.

There was one extra long hospital stay where they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with his knee swelling up. It got to the point where he couldn’t walk and was having a hard time getting around.

He finally got approved for a wheelchair and on that day, you’d think he won the lottery.

We got back home from the hospital, and I remember texting him asking if he wanted to come over to my parents for dinner. (He lives a 1/4 of a mile away from my parents) I said I could come pick him up, and his response? “I got my chair now, Sista.”

He was thrown so many punches over the 19ish months since he was given the crappy news about his cancer diagnosis. But yet, his sarcasm and silliness would emerge through the tough times.

The last week of Taylor’s life on Earth, he was on his way home from an appointment in Chicago after receiving the news that “there was nothing left for them to do.” He really hadn’t eaten a full meal in weeks and his pain level was off the charts.

On the way home, my parents asked if he wanted anything to eat and he said “a buffalo chicken pizza and a beer.” They looked at each other like, what in God’s green Earth? But they weren’t going to say what was on their mind. They ordered the dang pizza and picked up beer.

Hi everyone!

I figured it may be time to introduce myself, as many of you may not know me.

My name is Brittany, and I’m Taylor’s older sister — by 22 months. We shared a bond that not every sibling has the privilege of having. From day one, he was my best friend.

He put up with me dressing him in girl costumes, putting makeup and wigs on him, and I happily welcomed him into my playdates with my friends. He became my shadow, and I never minded.

As we got older, our friendship only grew stronger. He’d visit me in college, scare away any boyfriends he didn’t think were good enough for me, and eventually, we’d raise our firstborns alongside each other.

In 2020, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I told him in the car while he was on his way to pick up his son for the weekend. He took a deep breath and said, “Okay… it’s going to be okay, right?” I assured him it would be.

After 2.5 years of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries, I thought we were finally going to get back to our “normal” lives.

But then Memorial Day weekend of 2024, something changed.

Now Taylor was the one experiencing unusual symptoms and was (reluctantly) heading to doctor appointments.

In June of 2024, he received the official diagnosis: T-cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia/Lymphoma (T-ALL).

And then the tables turned.

We did everything together, but this was one thing I never wanted us to share.
