Here we meet the first Monday for the month of May, a month meant to celebrate Mothers. In honor of this, we showcase a gorgeous new work by Veronica Valdez. Recently completing her capstone in the Masters program at TTU, her work pushes themes of ancestral myth through visuals of lush nature intertwined with Mayan inspired imagery. Today we share "Nantli," a stunning painting displayed at her recent MAE exhibition. This masterpiece captivates the viewer in an intersection of human origin and mother earth.

May is going to be a month of steady momentum for Grey Edges and our collective artists. We cannot wait to share what we have been working on in the weeks to come!

Happy Monday! This is the last week of April 2026 and we wanted to end Autism Acceptance month with another sketchbook idea. This exercise is inspired by the sketchbooks of local artist Jessie (Dodington) Early. As an avid artist, art-journalist and trail runner Jessie is always carrying a sketchbook with her. They come in handy for those moments she needs to quiet her mind and bring stillness into the chaos of life.

This exercise is easy, you just need one basic shape.
Shape, a fundamental element of art, is a great touchstone for drawing something simple. All you have to do is repeat it. (Fun Art Fact: a repeated shape becomes a 'pattern' which then creates visual movement)

Step one: Draw a simple shape somewhere in the center of your sketchbook. Use any drawing tool you want. You can try a cloud shape, a swirl, a circle, or square like those in Jessie's examples.

Step two: Repeat your shape around the first shape staying as close as you want but not touching. Repeat this process until you reach the edge of the page.

Step three: Have fun and use this exercise when you need a quiet mind break!

New Work Alert! 🎨✨

The "Art Wall" at Cotton Court's Midnight Shift is bursting with vibrant personality! Check out the latest piece by Chris Ramos, "Prairie Holly" a clever and charming West Texas Prairie Extraordinaire that will steal your heart. Chris Ramos is known for his eclectic and energetic abstract works which balance alongside the sophisticated drawings of Roberto Garza. Both artists are local favorites and deserve much praise for their continued original and authentic art.

Make some time this month to visit Midnight Shift located in the Cotton Court Hotel. Have a cool drink, a good snack, and admire the new art ensemble that we are proud to put together for these two hard-working artists.

Are those pencils moving yet? We hope you have been inspired to get your sketchbooks out this month. Drawing is a great way to connect with our neurodivergent friends and family, not just for Autism Acceptance month, but anytime of the year. If freestyle drawing feels a little intimidating, don't stress, you can use tracing paper!

Tracing paper is an underrated and underused learning tool to practice controlled linework, or to get the feel of a complicated drawing. Try this for your next collaboration drawing:

Step 1: Choose your subject matter. This can be a photo from a book, magazine, or computer print out.
Step 2: Take a sheet of tracing paper and place it over your chosen subject matter. Press firmly so that you can see through it and continue to hold the paper down to support it in place with your non-drawing hand.
Step 3: Take your pencil or pen and trace your subject matter to the best of your ability and to the best of completion. It is okay to lift the tracing paper, from time to time, to double check where you are at.
Step 4: Once you have traced your subject, ask your neurodivergent partner to trace or add their contribution to create your Final Collaboration Conversation art piece!

Remember to have fun! What you have left is a memory of the experience and a recorded timeprint of art made together!

April has arrived, and with it, we take the time to honor Autism Acceptance Month. We are proud as an arts non-profit that our mission includes offering art support to our neurodiverse community. To open this month we share a collaborative parent-child drawing that expresses the bonds that art can create when made together.
Drawing as a solitary act can be meditative and therapeutic. When done with another person, it becomes a visual conversation. For the month of April we encourage you to try this with your neurodiverse family, friends, siblings, or children and see what conversations begin to emerge!

1. Start with lines and scribbles.
2. Take turns (this is how the conversation comes to life in statement and response).
3. Add colors, seek created shapes and fill them in.
4. Use your imagination. Do you see a landscape take shape? Does a face emerge?
Most importantly: have fun. This is to nurture, calm, and creatively inspire a visual conversation that will reveal much more than you think!

Feel free to send us your collaborations to share this month, we can't wait to see what you come up with!
