The first cold night is when every furnace in Lubbock kicks on at once, and every space heater comes out of the closet.

Today's small thing, before that night:
• Swap the furnace filter
• Give space heaters three feet of clear space, and plug them straight into the wall
• Press the test button on your carbon monoxide alarm. No CO alarm near the bedrooms? That's this week's purchase
• Never heat the house with a gas oven or stove

Carbon monoxide has no smell. The alarm is the only warning you get.
If you have a neighbor who heats with propane or an old wall unit, this is a good week to check on them.

📻 TONIGHT AT 7:00 PM — WTP MONDAY NIGHT GMRS NET!

People make the network.

Radios and repeaters give us the ability to communicate, but it’s the people using them who turn that equipment into a valuable community resource.

Every check-in builds familiarity. Every conversation strengthens relationships. And every person who gets on the air helps build a communications network we can depend on when it matters most.

Whether you’re a regular participant, new to GMRS, or just getting started with your first radio, we invite you to join us tonight!

📡 Channel 20R — 462.675 MHz
🔊 PL Tone: 141.3 Hz
🕖 7:00 PM — Lubbock, Texas

Our Monday Night GMRS Net is an opportunity to practice radio procedures, discuss emergency preparedness, and connect with others throughout the South Plains.

You don’t have to be a radio expert to participate. You just have to get on the air.

Ready Together. Stronger Together.

📡 HURRICANE ISAIAS — COMMUNITY COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANCE

As Hurricane Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast, West Texas Pathfinders stands ready to assist with communications between affected communities and families here on the South Plains.

Our community communications network includes GMRS, Amateur Radio, and digital messaging capabilities. Through our volunteer operators and available communications networks, we can help relay messages when normal communications are disrupted.

If you have family or friends in the affected areas, or you’re in an affected community trying to reach someone on the South Plains, we want you to know we’re here to help.

Our focus is simple: helping people stay connected, sharing information when appropriate, and supporting neighbors who may need assistance.

This is not an official emergency activation, and our ability to deliver messages depends on available communications paths and operators.

For communications assistance, contact West Texas Pathfinders through our page or visit our website.

For immediate life-threatening emergencies, contact 911 or local emergency services whenever possible.

Ready Together. Stronger Together.

Count the rechargeable batteries in your preparedness gear. Handheld radio, power bank, headlamp, solar pack, maybe a node. Most of us have more than we think.

It's Fire Prevention Week, and this year's national theme is safe charging for lithium-ion batteries. That's our gear.

Six habits from the NFPA:
• Use the charger that came with it, or one the maker approves
• Charge on a hard, flat surface, never on a bed or couch
• Unplug once it's full
• Stop using anything that gets hot, swells, leaks, smells odd, hisses or pops
• Charge e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside, away from exits
• Keep charging devices where you can see them

Today's small thing: pull every battery out of your go-bag and look at it. Puffy, cracked or warm means it's done. Then move the bedside charger off the mattress.

Lubbock's first freeze usually shows up the last week of October. In 2019 it showed up October 12th.

Today's small thing takes ten minutes. Unhook every garden hose, drain it, and put a cover on each outside faucet. A hose left attached, holds water against the faucet and that's where a split pipe starts.

The freeze tends to reach the north and west side of the South Plains first. Abernathy, you're usually ahead of Ransom Canyon on this one. Do it this week.

This is small thing #1 of eight. We'll post one every Tuesday and Thursday until the clocks fall back on November 1. Share it with the person in your family who leaves the hose out all winter. Every family has one. Me! I'm the one in my family.

📻 MONDAY NIGHT GMRS NET — 7:00 PM

A communications network doesn’t become useful during an emergency just because the repeater works.

It becomes useful because people already know how to use it.

Monday nights give us a chance to do something very simple: use the network. Make contacts. Learn voices and call signs. Get comfortable keying the radio. Find out where you can communicate from. And keep building relationships with other operators across our community.

None of that is particularly complicated—and that’s the point.

When communications actually matter, familiarity matters too.

📡 GMRS Channel 20 Repeater
462.675 MHz • 141.3 Hz tone
⏰ Tonight at 7:00 PM

Check in. Stick around for the conversation. Be part of the network.

Ready Together. Stronger Together.

📻 SIMPLEX SUNDAY — TONIGHT AT 8:00 PM!

Tonight we’re bringing voice and messaging together.

📡 GMRS Simplex
Channel 18 • 462.625 MHz
No repeater. Just radio-to-radio communication. Get on the air, test your range, and see who you can reach across the community.

🟢 MeshCore
Fire up your MeshCore device and join us on the mesh! For Simplex Sunday, we’ll be using the Public Channel to send messages, make contacts, and see who we can reach across the network. Whether you’re sitting at home or out testing coverage, jump in and say hello.

Simplex Sunday is about more than making contacts. It’s about using the decentralized communication systems we’re building as a community.

Every radio on the air and every node on the mesh gives us another opportunity to learn where our strengths are, find the gaps, and make the network stronger.

We don’t buy coverage. We build it.

Join us tonight at 8:00 PM.

📻 Voice on GMRS.
📱 Messages on MeshCore.
🤝 Together, we are the network.

Ready Together. Stronger Together.
