We're thrilled to announce that Appalachia Book Company has received a Literary Arts Grant from South Arts in support of CAMP, an illustrated novella by Yance Wyatt.

Yance is a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee whose work has appeared in ZYZZYVA, The Pinch, and the Los Angeles Review, and has been anthologized in the UK and Canada. Rooted in the oral traditions of the South and shaped by years of teaching creative writing at USC, his fiction carries the weight of place, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.

Look for CAMP from Appalachia Book Company in July 2026.

Thank you, South Arts, for your continued investment in Southern literary voices. 🏔️📖

🌿 CALL FOR COVER ART — These Dreaming Hills 🌿
We're looking for the face of something strange and rooted.
'These Dreaming Hills' is ABC's forthcoming anthology of speculative fiction — science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism — set in and inspired by Central Appalachia. Edited by Noah Ashley Blooms and publishing fall 2026, the collection reimagines this region's landscapes, histories, and futures through speculative lenses.

We want cover art that does the same.

Think: a mountain hollow that might be another planet. A figure that could be an ancestor or a visitor. Something unmistakably Appalachian and unmistakably strange.

We welcome painting, drawing, digital illustration, photography, collage, and mixed media. We're especially drawn to layered, atmospheric work — art that asks the viewer to lean in.

Selected artist receives $500 and full credit on the book and all promotional materials.

We strongly encourage submissions from artists with a personal connection to Central Appalachia.

Submission deadline: May 15, 2026

Does your book club love discovering new voices? 📚

Appalachia Book Company offers free chapbooks to book clubs in central Appalachia — along with custom readers' guides designed to spark great conversation.

We believe the best way to share Appalachian literature is to put it directly in readers' hands. So if your group is based in eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, southwestern Virginia, or eastern Tennessee, we'd love to connect.

There's no catch — the chapbooks and readers' guides are completely free.

Reach out to us at [email protected] to get your group set up. We can't wait to read with you. 🏔️

We're digging through treasures at Berea College's Hutchins Library Special Collections, and look what we found.

This photograph—"Family Music Session," circa 1900-1930—captures exactly what we're chasing for The Storied Song podcast: the moment when music was woven into daily life, when a porch became a stage and family became the band.

We're gathering images, recordings, and fragments like these to build the world of our podcast. Every visit to the archives reminds us: this music didn't just exist in performance halls. It lived on porches, in kitchens, at the end of long days.
The Storied Song drops soon. Stay tuned.
