🗳Early voting for the state primaries has begun!

There are three candidates running for the seat in the 17th district. This district consists of Lowell: Parts of ward 3, ward 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8
Tewksbury: Precinct 1. As we know the data center is located in this district.
Candidates-
Harini Aiyer
John Drinkwater
Anthony Leite

We have reached out to all three and asked to walk a fence line tour with us-
Harini Aiyer has been actively voicing her concerns at public hearings and has done multiple fence lines tours with members of HFL and on her own.

John Drinkwater is interested in a fence line tour with members we're waiting to hear back. He has mentioned he went to the neighborhood to chat with residents. We can't forget that he had voted for an expansion of diesel fuel for Markley in 2020.

Anthony Leite is interested in meeting us and walking a fence line tour with members of HFL. As a firefighter he has seen first hand what the facility looks like and has been there multiple times. Great opportunity to voice our concerns and potentially receive some suggestions.

Markley started digging before the Planning Board had even approved the subdivision, which raises some questions. What exactly were they digging for, and why did the work stop? If the digging was related why wasn’t it addressed as a site plan modification, especially if that work wasn’t included in the plans Markley submitted?

In 2024, when Markley was proposing to add several coolant towers and reconfigure their equipment yard for more diesel engines to be added, Markley officials were very welcoming to the planning board by being involved in site visits. Here, you have Markley’s Chief Legal Officer actively trying to engage with the Planning Department for a site visit. Why would a person want to actively invite them then to the detriment of the neighborhood but yet when it comes to a reasonable request for an extension to do the same so they could have the same audience, the answer was no?

Perhaps because the topography of the proposed street doesn’t make sense or was it something more? A signal, perhaps?

August 17th Planning Board on Markley's subdivision. Watch below.

At the 1hr 47 minute mark, the Planning Board begins discussion on the sub-division for the main Markley campus at 2 Prince Ave and the Newhall street addresses. During this process, Vice Chairman Frechette stated his inability to see the site was a cause for pause and to have the site be visited from the inside to explain the topography of the roads and how it would work with the slope on Newhall Street. The Stantec rep refused to have the meeting continued to have a site visit take place and forced the planning board to approve the sub-division. The deliberative process ends at the 2hr 41 minute mark before moving on the second sub-division at 45 Bolt Street which was also approved with the conditions set forth by the city departments.

Information on Data Centers and the Zoning Rewrite

“They (data centers) dug their own grave for the problems that have been caused for them and that’s why they got the backlash they deserve.”

Strong words from Texas Governor Gregg Abbott that shape not only the sentiment in Texas but he speaks to the nationwide issue of them. If Texas who was actively courting them is calling into question the behavior of data center operators, shouldn’t Massachusetts be doing the same?

Tonight's City Council agenda includes a response regarding the update to Lowell’s zoning rewrite including the work being done around zoning for data centers.

The timeline laid out in the document shows that this process is not happening overnight. A subcommittee milestone is expected in October, with additional steps continuing through the end of 2026 and into early 2027.

Will Markley wait for Lowell’s zoning rewrite to be completed and respect the wishes of the residents and the City Council or will they continue to pursue litigation and procedural maneuvers to move forward while the city is actively working to determine what is appropriate for data centers in Lowell?

Markley chose to move into a residential neighborhood. The residents did not choose to have an expanding data center placed in their backyard.
