When Accessibility Meets Reality

At BoltzStrong, we've worked hard to build something rare: a fully accessible kitchen and community space where people with disabilities can cook, learn, and belong – without barriers. We think about doorways, countertops, adaptive tools, dignity.

We didn't think hard enough about the plumbing.

Last month, our septic system at the Adaptive Kitchen required $1,704.90 in emergency repairs. The cause wasn't a single event – it was the cumulative reality of serving people with complex needs in a space that wasn't designed with those needs in mind. We've learned, and we've already made changes: caregivers now assist with bathroom access for anyone who needs it, and we're being much more intentional about what that "fully accessible" commitment really requires at every level of our infrastructure.

That lesson cost us $1,704.90 we don't have.

Eric and Yvonne have been carrying BoltzStrong on personal savings through a difficult stretch - health challenges, a job transition, and uncertainty that's affecting a lot of families right now. We're not asking for sympathy; we're asking for help covering a real cost so we can keep the doors open and keep doing work that matters.

Simple and impactful.

In Sweden, one school has quietly created a ripple of kindness — by turning leftover lunch into community support. Instead of scraping uneaten portions into waste bins, students are encouraged to drop extra servings into insulated thermal containers placed beside the cafeteria exit.

These containers are tightly sealed and labeled by type — rice, soup, veggies, or pasta — all still warm and safe. At the end of lunch hour, a small electric van from a local nonprofit arrives to collect the food. The meals are then distributed within hours to nearby shelters, elderly homes, and low-income households.

The idea started as a student council project but quickly gained traction. Kitchen staff began coordinating with local drivers. Science teachers looped it into lessons on food waste and sustainability. Even kindergartners joined in — proudly announcing their “extra scoop” donation at lunch.

The thermal bins themselves are made from recycled foam panels and stainless steel — keeping food warm without using electricity. One container can hold up to 50 portions.

Since the program launched, the school has reported a 40 percent drop in lunch waste. More importantly, students are learning empathy in real time — not from books, but by literally handing over part of their meal.

Other schools nearby are watching closely, with several already ordering similar bins.

This is more than just a food program — it’s a gentle, everyday lesson in shared abundance.
