SESSION 3 of the Emergency Preparedness Cohort ended today with all of us much more informed and motivated than we were when we arrived.

TOPIC: Evacuation & Sheltering In Place

The first hour had us thinking about what one must consider before evacuation and we completed a walkthrough of one of the backpacks.

The second hour, Amy from the Louisville Metro Emergency Management Agency, chimed in on what we'd discussed during the first hour, talked to us about LENS Alert and walked us through the LouReady app. She answered questions and was open when we had suggestions on how the EMA could better engage and inform community members.

INVENTOR OF THE SESSION: Moses West

He created the Atmospheric Water Generator, which is vital for producing clean water during climate disasters and other incidents.

Too much to tell here. Just know, the session was beneficial to all who were present and those they will relay the information to.

IF YOU SEE airborne dust from a construction site, call the Air Pollution Control District (502-574-6000) and file a complaint.

This happened today on Chestnut between Floyd and Preston, near hospitals. This is unhealthy, especially for those with preexisting health conditions.

They are supposed to have a water truck or some way to spray water to keep construction dust from becoming airborne.

SESSION 2 of the Emergency Preparedness Cohort is IN.THE.BOOKS!

Once again the members of the cohort were ready to learn, asked GREAT questions and also put forth their own knowledge during our session on drills and natural disasters.

We must give a HUGE Shout out to Sergeant Ella Lumpkins of the Louisville Fire Department. Another shoutout goes out to Captain Charles Rhudy, Private Anthony Himes and Private Cash Cameron, all of whom are with the Shively Fire Department.

All of them were super knowledgeable, thorough and responsive to the numerous questions we had.

The children got to decorate their own power outage kits from the last session and went home with a lantern, headlight and flashlight. They also went home with books related to various -weather related topics.

One of the children offered to be the speaker when we got to tornadoes. Unfortunately we were unable to cover that topic today but we sure did appreciate the offer.

The adults did a great job of completing homework from the last session.

Our Inventor for this session was Garret Morgan, who many of us know for inventing the three-way traffic signal. We highlighted him today for his invention of the "safety hood", which was the forerunner of the gas mask.

Scrum Boards and giveaways and microclimates oh my!!

Session 1 (Power Outages) of the Emergency Preparedness Cohort was a success!

We were blown away by the amount of participation during this session. Households listened, took notes, made suggestions and committed to attending the remaining sessions. Because of them, this session will become better and better as time goes on.

A big thanks goes out to REACT interns who helped to design, plan and execute this project. They are hard working, think outside the box and are able to pivot when necessary.

Not too many photos were taken because we were all into the subject matter but you better believe, it was great!

Session 2 will be even greater.

We are EXCITED for our first session of the Emergency Preparedness Cohort!

10 households will embark on a 3-month adventure, learning together. There will be 6 sessions that cover 6 emergency preparedness topics, the first being about power outages.

This is what we call our "In the Meantime" work.

While we wait on the EPA to ban harmful/hazardous/toxic chemicals...

While we wait on decision makers to gain the courage to stand up for us...

While we wait on this system that is protective of industry to transform into something that is highly protective of community...

We must protect ourselves and our neighbors.
