Spay Anyway

Spay Anyway 501c3 program providing spay/neuter assistance for cats in the Louisville area. We help with transportation if needed. We are not a rescue or rehoming group.

We focus on prevention rather than placement. To support our work: Paypal.me/spayanyway Our mission is to reduce the number of cats being given away for free and to further reduce the cat over-population problem. We strive to fill in gaps by seeking out people in need of help with spay and neuter, as well as offering transportation assistance.

We help surrounding areas with owned pets and indoor/outdoor cats that people have the ability to contain the day before an appointment. We are not able to arrange out of county trapping for strays at this time. We simply have no place to take them for immediate services, and we have no place to hold them to wait for appointments.

Everything we do is contingent upon having a volunteer willing and able to make the drive.

This week…..

Reached 32 cats fixed for one of the large households we assist. As mentioned before - a 30 plus household is not uncommon. We have a lot of these we assist and we are physically at one of them every single week.

Worked on a 40220 apartment complex with an uncooperative mystery feeder that doesn’t live on site but comes to dump massive amounts of disgusting food for stray cats. This feeder/non fixer has created a mess for residents of the area that we’re trying to clean up. šŸ˜

Started assisting a household that was trying to give away 14 unaltered cats on a free site….they are extremely receptive and cooperative and are now waiting until the cats are fixed before rehoming.

Got the prettiest girl with the prettiest name spayed (pictured). Her name is Milah 🩷

We helped 26 cats get fixed this week. We are 193 cats away from topping a yearly high. Can we do that? Yeah, absolutely!

The majority of teenage kittens we’ve had at clinics recently are in heat, if not already pregnant. If they don’t get in in time, kittens are going to have kittens.

Yes, that adorable brother and sister will do the dirty. Yes, that sweet little boy will knock up his momma.

It doesn’t stop until you make it stop.

🐾 26 cats and 2 dogs were fixed this week 🐾

Why do we basically say the same thing over and over, every week? Because spay and neuter is the ONLY SOLUTION. It is the most humane way to control the population. And our community is bursting at the seams with unwanted pets already.

It is the kindest and most impactful way to help the animal. The animal doesn’t have to suffer from heat cycles, pyometra, an uncontrollable desire to mate, birthing without medical assistance (human moms….do you all want to give birth without healthcare?), watching their kittens struggle to thrive, etc etc etc.

It helps the people who care for the animal (through avoidance of behavioral issues from hormones, through the trouble of finding homes for offspring, and through the cost of feeding extra animals as they multiply).

It helps your community. Every single birth prevented is one (or 6 or 10) less pets that will enter the shelter system one day. It’s less pets to overwhelm rescue groups trying to find good adopters for so many. It’s fewer pets to roam loose outside and fewer to pay for a lifetime of care for.

✨ Feel free to add a comment of another specific way spay/neuter helps ✨

✨ To anyone waiting on a response to a message or email, please be patient. It’s been a rough week and our team needs a little time to refresh ✨

āž”ļø SECURE CATS PROPERLY ā¬…ļø

If we are transporting your cats to an appointment, it is totally okay if you don’t have carriers. We have plenty of secure carriers to use.

We’ve been handed cats in a kennel without the top and bottom attached (at all šŸ™ƒ), cats in cardboard boxes, cats in wire kennels with a blanket instead of a tray as the bottom, and as always - cats in carriers without doors latched.

We double check absolutely everything before we step outside with your cats. We always have spare carriers with us if something is found insecure.

ā€¼ļøBut we need you to be just as concerned with your cat’s safety as we are ā€¼ļø

We have been transporting cats for 8 years with zero cats lost. Because we check doors (top and bottom in the hole), side clasps, do not accept soft carriers, and we mostly use our carriers that we know are secure.

Help us help you 🫠🫠🫠

When you give away kittens, you are giving away future moms and dads. You are taking a huge chance with their lives, and you are often adding to the population that ends up on the streets. Very few free kittens land in a safe, secure home that will provide the lifetime of vet care they need.

What is the solution? GET YOUR PETS FIXED. Do not enable reproducing. Too late on that? The next step is damage control. Get mom fixed now and the kittens fixed before rehoming (we can help) or wait for rescue space to open up. Both require patience. Little lives being safe are worth the wait.

38 cats fixed this week!

We finished a 40210 owned pet household that had *27* litters of kittens born before they found help. We are SO glad you found us. 🩷

Still working on a 40210 stray location…..we have now caught 16 cats and 17 kittens here. It has taken many hours of one volunteer’s life to get this done. Large locations that got out of control are the biggest reason we can’t help every stray location we are asked to help with.

🧔 The orange guy with RBF is actually a very nice cat.

We recouped all but $575 of our cost for the gunshot wound emergency - thanks to you guys!

A dog we recently assisted with getting neutered and vaccinated was shot yesterday. Animal control responded to the 911 call and transported the dog to and from Veterinary Specialist Partners urgent care center. We paid the bill late last night to have the bullet fragments removed from the dog’s mouth and suture his wounds inside and out. The bill was $1712.94 and we’re asking for assistance in recouping some of this. Saying no yesterday was not an option. It was an emergency situation that needed an immediate plan.

āž”ļø $810 has been raised so far ā¬…ļø

*To answer the most asked question about this - the dog owner called 911 immediately. We do not have the details of what LMPD is doing.

*Jen Harrison/Pets4Life is also trying to help us with this bill. If anyone has seen those posts and supported through that - that’s perfect too! Thank you ā˜ŗļø

Pictured is another dog in this household that we’ve helped *not the dog shot yesterday*.

From the dog owner ā€œI don’t have the right words to say thank you for thisā€. šŸ„¹šŸ–¤

We helped 23 cats get spayed/neutered/vaccinated this week including….

A Portland kitten that was tossed out like trash then was quickly rescued by a family that really loves her, so much that the entire family saw her off to her appointment.

We are receiving requests to find homes for pets or strays multiple times a day, from all over Kentucky. If someone refers you to us for that, they are referring you inappropriately.

Rescue groups assist with rehoming needs when they can. We are not a rescue group. We are a nonprofit spay/neuter assistance group - we hope to reduce the need for rehoming by reducing the population through spay/neuter.

For pet retention assistance in the Louisville area, refer to KHS: https://www.kyhumane.org/services/petretention/

Use extreme caution using free pet pages for rehoming. Ask for a vet reference and go to the prospective home to make sure it’s a safe place. Put effort into finding a safe home. A FB post ā€œcome get these catsā€ is not effort. Your local animal abusers are absolutely on the free pet pages.

Check the animal abuse registry for your local shelter before rehoming (although it is grossly incomplete due to insufficient welfare laws).

Just another plea for more people to get on board with spay/neuter, whether it be pet owners, stray cat feeders - or the general public wanting to be a part of the solution.

Less than 5 people do this every week. These 5 or so people get calls, texts, messages all day and all night. Every. Single. Day. It’s overwhelming. We can’t fix all the problems or make them go away. The shelter can’t either. All the rescue groups in the world can’t either. But YOU….YES, YOU šŸ‘‹ can do something to help. If you have more resources than many (a vehicle, an able body, the internet, a phone, $30 for an appointment deposit at SNIP perhaps)…..you can make such a difference.

Pictured is a mom cat in foster with her 4 kittens. I don’t know what she’s been through or how many kittens she has had to raise. But she is exhausted. She doesn’t love motherhood. She tolerates the kittens and does what she has to for them. Her and many other cats would like to just be cats.

Spay and neuter everything. Help someone. Foster a dog or kittens for your shelter or rescues. Donate a bag of food or $10 to the groups doing the work. Buy a volunteer a coffee ā˜•ļø. Spread the word that there are resources available. Just do something.

We got a momma cat spayed this week that was posted with litter after litter on a free pet page. We offered to get her spayed over and over, but the offer was refused because they needed mom gone too. So, they had more and more litters to deal with instead of simply turning off the faucet. We got mom and all of the kittens that people didn’t kitten nap into a safe place. Situations where people refuse spay/neuter assistance because they need the cats gone ALWAYS results in more cats being born that you will also need gone. Come on, guys…..

Spay/neuter can always help your situation, even if it’s a short term assist. Most importantly, it will help the cats and the community that you are trying to discard your unaltered pets out into. Please start caring more about your community and what you put into it.

We helped ✨48✨ cats get fixed this week, including the last few (for now šŸ˜), from a 50 plus property. We also fixed the last of the adults from a 40208 situation that started out feeling hopeless. It is fully under control now, with only a couple kittens to fix when they are big enough.

About our group...

Spay Anyway is a small group of people who are willing to go the extra mile to get additional cats fixed. We target people/cats who are not taking advantage of the other options that are already in place. We work closely with Shamrock to get some additional pet cats altered. We also provide trapping and transporting for the stray population. There is a tremendous need for assisting both owned cats as well as outdoor strays. We love team work and we are committed to reducing the cat population.
