The UofL English Department will be hosting an upcoming event entitled “Cultivating Transnational Coalitional Subjectivity: Rhetorical Tension, Barriers, and Tactics” with Dr. Shui-yin Sharon Yam.

In this talk, Dr. Shui-Yin Sharon Yam will perform what Wendy Hesford calls “intercontextual reading” to trace how the coalitional potential between the Hong Kong anti-authoritarian movement and the U.S. Black Lives Matter protests were eclipsed by appropriation, disinformation, and misalignment that pitch grassroots movements, activists, and potential allies against each other. This reading leads to an examination of the rhetorical strategies deployed by Hong Kong public intellectuals to harness the “coalitional moments” between the two movements.

This event will be held on Wednesday, March 18 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in The University Writing Center (Ekstrom Library Room 132). We hope to see you there!

You are invited to join us Wednesday, January 21st at 11:30am for a conversation with Dr. Diana Kim, Associate Professor of Political Science at Georgetown University. The event will be held in Ford Hall Room 305.

This talk will center on untouchability as a global challenge. Untouchability is often understood as a peculiarly Indian problem, especially in reference to its caste system and ritual orders of stratification thought unique to Hinduism. This talk aims to unsettle such preconceptions by exploring the post-World War Two making of varieties of untouchable groups across Asia, revealing a remarkable history of forgotten diversity.

Lunch will be provided. We hope to see you there, register now! https://us5.list-manage.com/survey?u=d2173f542a22fbcf16ad5b98b&id=e9b319b3c7&attribution=false
