Starting in just two weeks is my first in-person, group trauma sensitive yoga offering in over two years and I cannot wait to gather with this group🌿

This offering is designed for folks who have experienced sexual trauma. During two of the sessions we’ll be joined by two local professionals who’ve dedicated their careers and lives to supporting and educating people around sexual health and wellness.

All bodies and identities welcome and celebrated. No experience with movement or yoga is required or necessary.

is an empirically validated, clinical intervention for complex trauma or chronic, treatment resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The TCTSY methodology is based on central components of the hatha style of yoga, where participants engage in a series of physical forms and movements. Elements of standard hatha yoga are modified to maximize experiences of empowerment and to cultivate a more positive relationship to one's body. Unlike many public yoga classes, TCTSY does not use physical hands-on adjustments to influence a participant's physical form. Rather, TCTSY presents opportunities for participants to be in charge of themselves based on a felt sense of their own body.

These core components of , Invitational Language, Choice Making, Non-Coercion, Interoception, and Shared Authentic Experience are at the root of A Trauma Sensitive Yoga Practice. And for me, colleagues of mine and other folks who have trained in and had the opportunity to practice TCTSY, these components can inform so much more than a movement practice. They’re how I strive to show up as a parent, partner, and friend.

If this feels interesting to you I have 2 exciting offerings beginning in May:
• 20-hr foundational training in TCTSY, Sundays in May 12-3pm PDT (great for learning how to operate from this trauma-informed lens for anyone really; yoga teachers, clinicians, educators, etc) offered virtually, sliding scale and scholarships available

•in-person TCTSY 6-week series for folks who have experienced sexual trauma. Tuesdays May 3-June 7 6pm (offered in Tacoma, WA-all bodies and identities welcome and celebrated) limited spaces available. $90

This practice of ā€œbrave space not safe spaceā€ has come alive for me in so many different ways over the last year. But I keep coming back to how practicing it can support us in truly, authentically sharing power and creating trauma-informed spaces. And that’s just one way we might embody this practice.

Come explore with me how the practice of Trauma Center-Trauma Sensitive Yoga can offer tools and ways of being that center agency, sharing power, and opportunities to be brave.

I’m excited for this next foundational training because we’ll meet online Sunday’s in May, from 12-3pm PST rather than over one full weekend. This structure might be a good fit for folks who have barriers in attending a full workshop in one weekend, or the timing might just be great for what you need.

Each time I start prepping for these workshops I get so excited about all the questions, curiosities, and ideas each unique group brings to the table. The practice of Trauma Center-Trauma Sensitive Yoga give us a powerful framework for holding space for learning and exploring these questions and so many more.

I am so excited, nervous, grateful, to share with you all this transition. A transition away from calling my work a ā€œsafe spaceā€, and practicing stepping into my full, authentic self and the work I have to offer the world as Alli Jones Ewing. I’ll be changing the name of this account, and have an incredible new website to share SO SOON!

I have so many words of gratitude to the folks along the way who have helped me see the harm I was causing by calling my work ā€œsafeā€ and the learning around why and how I can do better. I will continue to show up in ways where I am working to honor the complexities of the human experience and create spaces where power is shared, people are believed, and our experiences are honored.

Speaking of connection...the greater Tacoma yoga community is coming together (virtually) on Wednesday May 12th in a joint fundraising effort with funds raised going directly to Give India.

I've been in deep thought about Covid-19 and India. I've been reading news stories, talking to Desi friends, and responding to the call to support.

I came to yoga with an awareness that it was from India, and in many of the trainings in which I participated, there was hardly a nod given to the origins of the practice of yoga. I came to yoga with an awareness of what cultural appropriation was because I learned about taking something from someone else's culture without little appreciation for or reparations to the source culture in my first dismantling racism training, and really from my lived experience as a Black person. As my practice of yoga deepened and opportunities to travel to India for various yoga retreats emerged, I always resisted traveling there because many of these retreats were led by white women with little awareness or knowledge of cultural appropriation. My perception was that many of these trips were about traveling to a foreign country to see how we might save the poor people of India while deepening our practice for individual gain. Many of these opportunities seemed to be centered around the individual self vs. the larger Self.

What is interesting to me now is that many yoga teachers aren't speaking up about India and the suffering that you don't have to look far to see. I am not saying we need to pity India's people; pity isn't the same thing as empathy, compassion, reparations, and action. I am saying we need to do something to respond. Especially those of us who benefit from the healing nature of this practice. Especially for those of us who profit from the practice.

Yoga is about remembering our connection with all beings. Awareness is only part of this. The noticing happens first, and then we must respond to what we see. We must respond to what causes us dissonance and isn't right. If you are not Desi and someone who has benefited from the practice of yoga, please consider offering support. Not from an ego place or some space derived from a savior complex, but because responding to a country hurting is the yogic and right thing to do.
