Today is National Military and Veteran Su***de Awareness Day. In 2017, Capt. Drew Ferguson, a man from my small hometown in Ohio, died by su***de. Drew was a Ranger, Green Beret, GWOT Veteran, and bronze star recipient. I didn't know Drew personally but I was aware that his loss created ripples impacting all who knew and loved him. Learning of Drew's loss was the ember that sparked the H.E.R.O. Run.

The included stats are not the most recent but I believe they are worth sharing. The data continues to show that Veterans not connected to the VA die by su***de at a higher rate than Veterans enrolled in the VA. Data also shows that the rate of su***de loss is higher in Active Duty/Reserves/Guard components compared to the Veteran population.

My hope is that we continue to reach out to our Veterans and Service Members when we are concerned and ask if they are thinking about su***de. I hope we normalize needing support and connect them to resources. I hope we help end stigma that is a barrier to seeking support. I hope we spread the message that asking for help is the bravest thing someone can do.

This event is all about bringing the community together and connecting veterans and first responders with the support, resources, and organizations that are here to help. There will be food trucks, a live band, and multiple veteran and first responder organizations on site providing information on benefits, healthcare, mental health, employment, housing, education, and more.
Come out, show your support, and help us build a stronger community for those who have served and continue to serve.

We're close to wrapping up and feeling amazed by this year. If you would have told us at our inaugural race that by year 5 we'd have multiple running groups on the course, sell out three days before race day, and donate over $35,000 to our supported charities, we would have laughed hysterically.

It is astonishing to see hundreds of people gather to honor our service members who died in battle and those we lost at home to the psychological wounds of war. As President Truman said in 1945, "Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude." We feel privileged to have created an event where members of the community remember and honor our fallen heroes. I hope we remember and honor them daily ❤️
