Venezuela Update!

We are so grateful to share an update on our efforts to respond with water filters in Venezuela.

The Water By Women team is in La Guaira, Venezuela, distributing water filters to communities affected by the devastating June 24 earthquakes.

When we launched this response, our goal was to raise $35,000 to provide 1,000 filters.

You helped us raise more than $50,000.

That means the 400 filters our team carried into Venezuela are only the beginning. With the support we've received and special disaster pricing from Sawyer Products, we will soon be shipping 1,000 more filters for distribution.

Our team is working alongside trusted local partners, the Diocese of La Guaira and Cáritas, its local humanitarian network, to reach communities to provide safe water now and during the long recovery ahead.

And this recovery will be long.

La Guaira was the area most severely affected by the earthquakes. Homes, health facilities and essential infrastructure were damaged, and safe water, sanitation and other basic services remain important parts of the recovery effort. The immediate emergency may have passed, but for many Venezuelan families, rebuilding is just beginning.

Our team is already into its second round of training and filter delivery. We're not simply distributing filters — we're training people to use and maintain them so these tools can continue serving families as they rebuild.

We're grateful to Sawyer Products for their special disaster pricing, which has helped make this response possible at approximately $35 per filter, and to our all-volunteer distribution network for helping us move these filters into the hands of people who need them.

And there are moments of hope in the middle of unimaginable destruction.

One of Manuel's coworkers even 3D-printed toys to bring to children in the affected communities.

As Shawn Huffman, Water By Women board member, shared:

“Human words cannot describe the total life devastation I saw today in La Guaira, yet somehow the smiles of children I met give me hope to persevere.”

We have much more to share from the team on the ground.

400 filters are there. 1,000 more are coming. And this work is just beginning.

💧A Weekend Reminder💧

The things that feel ordinary to us can be life-changing for someone else.

Turning on the faucet.
Filling a water bottle.
Making a meal.
Brushing your teeth.
Giving your kids a drink when they are thirsty.

We don't often think twice about clean water.

But, around the world, women and families are still working every day to access it.

That's why we believe clean water is about more than providing a filter to a Water Woman. It's about dignity, health, opportunity, and the freedom to focus on life instead of simply finding safe water.

We’re at a conference this week sharing the work of Water By Women — and our hands-on water filter demonstration has given us a pretty powerful reminder.
We filled a bucket with water from the bathtub, carried it over to our booth, and then… added dirt to it.
Why? Because the water we have access to here is so clean that we literally have to muddy it up to demonstrate what the filter can do.

Most of us here have the privilege of turning on a faucet and having safe water appear. We don’t have to walk miles carrying water for our families. We don’t have to wonder if the water we’re drinking will make our children sick. For millions of people around the world, that reality is very different.

Today, we’re grateful for the water we have — and even more motivated to help make clean, safe water a reality for everyone.

Every filter has a story.

Long before a water filter reaches a family, it's been touched by many hands.

Someone picked up a crochet hook and made a filter cover to help protect the filter. Someone else braided a lanyard to help keep the cleaning syringe close at hand. Someone gave generously to make the kit possible. Volunteers packed each piece with care.

It takes a community to make clean water possible.

Clean water shouldn't be complicated.

Around the world, families face the daily challenge of finding clean, safe drinking water.

At Water By Women, we believe the solution can be simple: we put water filters directly into the hands of women, along with the training to use them – providing clean drinking water for life, right where it's needed most.

And it doesn't stop there. Every Water Woman commits to sharing clean, safe water with 3 other families, so the impact multiplies fast.

To date, we've equipped and trained 236,667 Water Women around the world.

Each Water Woman represents more than one family. She's creating healthier homes, sharing clean water with others, and strengthening her community– one filter, one family, and one act of generosity at a time.

CALLING ALL STUDENTS & SCHOOLS!

We’ve been so grateful for the amazing response to our call for crocheted water filter covers and filter lanyards! We ship a lot of filter kits, so we always need more hands to help us assemble them.

This is a great project for schools, classrooms, clubs, and student groups — and the whole school can participate!

🧶 Crocheted filter covers are a creative way for students and community members to contribute to the work of providing clean water.
🔗 Lanyards are simple to make and can be a fun, hands-on project, especially for younger students.

These projects can also connect naturally to learning about:

💧 Clean water and public health
🌎 International studies and geography
📚 Social studies and global communities
♻️ Sustainability and environmental science
🤝 Civic engagement and service learning

Older students can help organize a project or earn service hours, while younger students can participate in age-appropriate hands-on activities. A classroom can take on the project — or an entire school can work together toward a goal!

Whether your students crochet, make lanyards, or help organize a project, their work becomes part of a larger effort to help provide clean water to people who need it.

Why are mothers at the heart of our work?

Because in communities across the world, mothers know what their families — and communities — need.

When we equip a mother with a water filter and the knowledge to use it, she doesn’t just receive clean water for herself. She becomes a source of clean water for her family and neighbors.

We call these women Water Women. Every woman who receives a filter agrees to use and maintain the filter and share clean water with 3 other families.

As our Co-Founder, Arnie LeMay, has said, a mother’s love is a universal constant.

Because no matter where we live or what language we speak, a mother’s love is something we all understand. ❤
