🐾 WHAT’S STOPPING YOU FROM SHOWING UP?

First-day jitters? Afraid you won’t know what to do? Worried your heart can’t handle it? Trust me, we’ve all felt those things.. and know when you come, we are here to help. ❤️ Our regular volunteers would love to meet you and show you the ropes.

The gift of volunteering isn’t being able to save them all. It’s the difference you make when you simply show up… taking them for a walk on the trail, playing ball in the fenced-in yard, giving some lovins and plenty of tummy rubs, or simply sitting with them and giving them time to decompress from the stressful shelter environment. There is no greater reward than knowing that, even if only for a little while, all they felt was love. ❤️🐾

If you’ve been thinking about volunteering at the Loudon County Animal Shelter, consider this your invitation!

Send us a message, and we will help coordinate a day when one of our regular volunteers will be there, so we can meet you and show you how everything works. We have a few that are there at different times all through out the week. The shelter is open Monday- Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM.

We would love to get Fat Alberta, I mean Charm, into a single cat home. She needs to lose 5-7 lbs.

Let’s talk about Kennel Stress in our shelter dogs.

Shelter dogs spend 23 hours or more per day in their small pens. Loudon County has such small pens, it’s not even possible to put an off-the-floor dog bed in the pen. They lay on sheets mostly and occasionally blankets directly on the cold cement floor.
The stress of confinement in this environment can lead perfectly friendly dogs to act out, displaying kennel reactivity and even biting behaviors.
For example, we have a wonderful Cattle Dog named Lucky. He jumps and barks at the kennel door when you walk by and you think he wants to bite your face off. But he is anxious and stressed out by being in the situation he is in. He is a working dog stuck in a small pen almost 24 hours a day. This is almost like putting a toddler in a playpen and ignoring it for 23 hours.

If you meet Lucky while he is in the kennel, he barks and growls and jumps on the door. That video will be in the first comment (you can only post one video) But the video attached is of Lucky out of his kennel. Look at the difference in his demeanor. I am absolutely in love with this dog. If I had a fenced yard, he would be mine.

All this to say don’t judge a dog by it’s behavior in the kennel. In fact, if you come to the shelter to consider adopting a dog, don’t go back to the kennels. Please ask a shelter employee or one of our volunteers to get that dog out for you. So you can see the real dog.

Stop making the shelter clean up the mess left by indiscriminate breeding. People won’t neuter and then blame the shelter for not having room when it’s time to dump those accidental puppies.

Livestock guardians and herding dogs are at increased risk for accidental breeding due to all the time they spend outside with their herd. Prevent accidental breeding by scheduling your spay or neuter ASAP thanks to a grant from Dogs Trust USA

Update: Kai is coming back to the shelter tomorrow after his weekend break. He loved being out of that unholy tiny pen for a while. Weekend breaks help us to get to know the shelter dogs better.
What we learned: Kai loves being outside. So a fenced yard is required for him. After all, he is a farm breed. Kai is great with other dogs and is very loving (nothing we didn’t already know). But he isn’t housebroken yet. He is smart though so he shouldn’t be too hard to train. Housebreaking a dog takes vigilance, but doing it right is effective. And no, You NEVER punish them or smack them with a newspaper or rub their nose in the p*e spot. He is worth the effort! Call 865-458-5593 to meet him.

Kai has been sprung for the weekend. He isn’t doing so well in the shelter, as most dogs are not, so he got a weekend respite with a volunteer. If you want to meet him over the weekend email us at [email protected]

Meet Blitz! He is a 1 year old black German Shepherd mix male. He is super smart. He loves to chase balls for treats. He is a little slow to sit in this video. Normally he does it without a verbal command. It was really windy and limbs were falling all around us. He is really smart.
