Our Hearts Are Heavy for the community in the City of Longview, Washington.

We are grieving with our community today and standing alongside the employees, families, and everyone impacted by the tragedy at Nippon Dynawave.

When something like this happens so close to home, it is not just news. It is our neighbors. It is our friends. It is people who went to work, and people waiting for answers.

To the first responders and all those continuing to serve in this incredibly difficult situation: we are profoundly thankful for your dedication.

Today, our heroes are the workers and their families. They deserve our respect, our compassion, and our quiet support. May every family affected feel the unwavering care of this community around them.

If your family receives food assistance in Longview, Kelso, Woodland, or anywhere in Cowlitz County, something important is happening this May.

Federal rules are changing how food benefits work in Washington starting May 2026. Some families will be moved to a new program automatically. Some may see their monthly amount go down. And some adults will go through a new work requirement screening at their next eligibility review.

The most important thing to know right now: missing your eligibility review is the fastest way to lose coverage. Make sure DSHS has your current address so you do not miss their notices.

We broke it all down in plain language on our blog so you know exactly what to expect and what to do now that May is here.

If you know someone in Cowlitz County who receives SNAP or food benefits, please share this post with them. A lot of people will not hear about these changes until it is too late.

Sharing this takes two seconds and could protect a family's access to food.

For Spanish-speaking neighbors, we have a translated video walkthrough, link is in the comments.

Our Care Coordinators are local, they have lived experience, and they are here to help.

Questions? More information and links in the comments.

Recently, we’ve seen teen overdoses in our local schools, but there is a dangerous "social mask" where people pretend this only happens to certain groups.

The uncomfortable truth is that accidental overdoses can happen to anyone, including family members who are simply prescribed op**te medications or teens trying a pill they didn't know was laced with Fentanyl.

You can walk right into the Kelso DSHS Community Service Office and pick up free Narcan and free Fentanyl testing strips.

They also offer educational material and treatment options.

Narcan is completely harmless. If you administer it to someone who is having a bad reaction and it turns out they don't need it, it does absolutely nothing to them.

Fentanyl strips allow you to test a pill to ensure it isn't laced before a tragedy happens.

We do not condone illegal drug use, but we loudly stand for harm reduction, detox resources, and substance use disorder treatment.

Parents, talk to your teens. Be the exception who carries Narcan and is ready to save a life.

Share this with someone who needs to know.

Thank you so much to our incredible Cowlitz County community. We are deeply grateful for the dedicated volunteers and for the overwhelming generosity of everyone who recently donated meals, snacks, and essential supplies. Your compassion helps create a calm, respectful environment and reflects the very best of our community in action.

Our approach is built on a simple but powerful "relational service model." Often, the first step to changing a life starts with building rapport and trust through access to daily living essentials such as shelter, food, laundry, and positive human connection.

Over time, that trust opens the door to life-changing support like care coordination, supported employment, and permanent supportive housing.

Whether it's providing a hot meal, volunteering, or donating basic hygiene items, your support brings dignity and stability to those who need it most.

It's hard to ask for help, especially when you feel judged or lost in the system.

At Love Overwhelming, our state-certified peer community based staff know what it's like to need a hand, and we are dedicated to helping our unhoused neighbors navigate the path to recovery and housing.

Our approach is built on a simple but powerful "relational service model." Often, the first step to changing a life starts with a load of laundry. Through our Laundry Love program, we provide guests with clean clothes, which helps us build rapport and trust. Over time, that trust opens the door to life-changing support like care coordination, supported employment, and permanent supportive housing.

As the lead operator of the Longview Severe Weather Shelter, we are committed to keeping our community safe during extreme cold. But we can't do it alone. Community collaboration is the root system that makes our mission possible. Whether it's providing a hot meal, volunteering, or donating basic hygiene items, your support brings dignity and stability to those who need it most.

Four days ago, a 15 year old student at RA Long High School in Longview reportedly overdosed and required Narcan. The student survived.

This is why harm reduction matters in Longview WA. This is why Narcan access in Cowlitz County saves lives. This is why schools, parents, youth programs, churches, and community organizations must treat overdose prevention as a public health priority, not a political debate.
