Farming in America is harder than ever. Drought, extreme weather, rising costs, development pressures, and labor challenges are pushing farmers to their limits. Meanwhile, climate change —the very force behind many of these struggles — is driving a surge in demand for clean energy, transforming farmland into solar fields. Save the Farm, Save the Future follows Colorado farmers and ranchers — from sheep and cattle ranchers to peach growers and small organic farmers — as they explore agrivoltaics, a promising new approach that combines solar power and agriculture on the same land. Can this innovation help save farms while meeting society’s need for renewable energy?

Join us for the screening of this film created by Free Range Films in collaboration with Colorado Agrivoltaic Learning Center and funded in part by the Walton Family Foundation.

A panel discussion with the filmmaker Chad Weber, Allison Jackson of Colorado Agrivoltaic Learning Center, and me will follow the screening.

Join us next Saturday, May 17th for a community day at Jack's Solar Garden just south of Longmont. This is an opportunity to visit the premier site for agrivoltaics in the country while talking with a variety of tablers - local farms, local nonprofits, and researchers - and enjoying coffee from a local coffee cart, Potheads. We even have Longmont City Councilman Matthew Popkin entertaining the crowd with his piano!

This is our end of season fundraising and thank you event for our community to join us for an evening on the farm. It's a morning to visit with various farmers in our area, hear from local energy organizations, get tours of Jack's Solar Garden, and see Bateria Alegria (a Brazilian steel drum marching band) perform inside our solar array! Our first Agrivoltaics in Colorado webinar of 2024 is happening on January 25th at 1:00pm!

Join us as we discuss economic modeling of agrivoltaic systems, from infrastructure to output, with James McCall, a Senior Analyst for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Jake Marley, the Manager of Hyperion Systems in Massachusetts.

Jack's Solar Garden is now looking for the 2024 Artist on the Farm!

Since 2020, there's been a mixed media artist, performance dancer, photographer and plein air painter.

If you know of an artist in the Boulder County area interested in the opportunity to inspire our local community through art, send them our way.

A $1,000 stipend will be provided, as well as endless opportunities to showcase your work throughout the growing season.

Earlier this year, Colorado Open Lands received funding to explore alignment of renewable energy location and conservation easements from the Land Trust Alliance and we are now thrilled to be part of a partnership with American Farmland Trust and Colorado State University to engage Colorado farmers and ranchers on agriculturally compatible solar development. On Tuesday, Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) announced awards of the state’s inaugural funding for Agrivoltaics Research and Demonstration Grants, and we are thrilled that our partnership outreach initiative received funding. COL is excited about the potential of agrivoltaics to bring renewable energy opportunities to Colorado, while supporting continued viability of working lands, and especially new options to offset costs or increase income for farmers and ranchers. We appreciate this funding from the Colorado Department of Agriculture to work with great partners to center the voices of farmers and ranchers in the exploration of agrivoltaics.
