Pug Rescue of Korea

Pug Rescue of Korea Founded in 2009, Pug Rescue of Korea gives unwanted pugs a second chance at life.

We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization, which means your donations are tax-deductible. Most of our rescued pugs fly to the US to find their forever homes (as their rehoming rate is very low in Korea). Adoption Inquiries: [email protected]

⚠️ Sensitive Content Warning: Swipe with caution—the following photos show a graphic medical injury.

❇️ Right after we announced that our rescue suspension was lifted and we could take in dogs again (while still being mindful of finances), this 5-year-old white male pug came to our attention via a shelter listing 🤍.

After several residents reported him wandering around as a stray, he arrived at the shelter on July 14 with a critical eye injury. His eyeball was dangerously protruding from his eye socket. The shelter vet performed emergency surgery, pushing the eyeball back in, then suturing it – obviously a temporary solution that likely increased pressure in his eye, but I guess at least it was back in and not dangling out…?

His hold date was up on July 24, but, after daily pestering, volunteer .ddeck.m pulled some strings to get him out a couple days earlier.

We had to.

In his present condition, he may not have made it. And, even if the shelter waited it out for his original owner or somebody to adopt him -- let’s be real. Nobody would be adopting him with an eye like this. He would surely have been euthanized after July 24. This poor boy would have experienced abandonment, pain, suffering, and then death.

NOT ON OUR WATCH😤.

When .ddeck.m picked him up, it was hard for her to manage. He looked unstable. He was in a lot of pain. He kept scratching his eye as well as the crate.

And, if that weren’t enough, the shelter informed her that he has a heartworm infection – which complicates his treatment plan.
When we were alerted to his case, we realized how fortunate that we had just resumed rescue operations—allowing us to act before it was too late. Thank you for your donations, which made his rescue possible 🙏🏼.
ddeck.m is grateful that we could save him: “It would’ve hurt so much if we couldn’t rescue him.” 🥺

He’s currently en route to the ophthalmologist where we’ll get his full diagnosis, treatment plan, and cost estimate.

Thank you to .ddeck.m for driving 8 hours in total yesterday for this rescue mission!

A week ago, we launched our big fundraising appeal, uncertain if we would even meet 25% of our goal. Well, we exceeded it, raising $28,005! THANK YOU 🙏🏼.

We are immensely grateful to our community of pug lovers 💖. As you know, we are a small rescue group – in 2025, we rescued 41 dogs and this year only 8 (due to our finance-induced rescue moratorium). We survive on the work of a very small team of unpaid volunteers. We rely on your generosity of time and money to keep saving neglected pugs.

Although we’ve raised enough to resume rescue operations, we must maintain our fundraising efforts, or we will be in this hole again. There will be dogs with medically complex cases. There will be starving dogs, battling disease and infections. There will be dogs with long untreated medical conditions. There will be dogs who’ve been through hell producing litters, living outdoors in freezing temps during the winter and in the stifling heat and 95% humidity of Korean summers.

More fundraising is coming, such as NEW merch, East Coast & West Coast events, and silent auctions. Supporters are also raising funds for us, such as , who is donating a portion of her August tattoo sales to us. Please continue to support us at these outlets!

Remember that 3yo shelter pug we said we could save if we raised another $1000? Well, we raised the funds (yay!), but when we called the shelter, they told us her owner had been found, so she went home with them. (We suspect she will turn up again, as she’s shown up as a stray a few times now.)

So, we will rescue this 8yo girl instead! She’s been in the shelter since May, and, fortunately, the shelter has held off euthanasia for 2 months.

Shelter staff reached out to .ddeck.m about this sweet girl, surrendered after her owner entered a dementia facility. The shelter held her past her deadline hoping for an adopter, but as summer overcrowding set in, time ran out. She’s incredibly lucky they called us instead of euthanizing—now she is safe 🥹.

We pick her up from the shelter this Sat! Stay tuned for an update from our rescuer 😊!

This is a heavy update. Due to mounting vet bills, we have officially suspended all rescue operations 😩.

Our rescuer, Kim, works a full-time job, devoting every free hour to feeding, medicating, & saving pugs. She gives up her personal life for them. Because she puts them first, her own needs—including reimbursement paperwork—come last.

When we finally sat down to tally our bills, the reality was staggering. Between Kim’s out-of-pocket costs + what we owe our vets, our debt is $25,500.85.

100% of this is for essential medical care & specialized surgeries covering 11 pugs w/the highest bills. To be responsible, we can’t take in new rescues until we repay Kim & our vets. We want to get back to saying "yes," but need your help.

Why is pug rescue so costly? Pugs are medically complex. Adoption fees ($350–$1150) don't cover it all.

What it takes to save just 1 dog:

🔵 $1,200–$2,500: Air transport from Korea to US
🔵 $800–$2,000: Basic intake (vetting, vaccines, dentals, spay/neuter)
🔵 $2,000+: Specialist care (BOAS airway surgery, eye/ortho surgeries, heartworm treatment).
Note: US vet costs double if a foster needs care after arrival

Mica's Story: We tragically lost Mica to GME, a progressive brain disease. She was severely neglected & it went untreated. We fought for her for 1.5 years so she could finally know love. We don’t regret a single penny. Her bills reached $8,936.42; we still owe $4,235.05 of that.

We’re not complaining—this is our reality. Moving forward, we will use AI tools to process int’l receipts & track expenditures in real-time so we can fundraise proactively & prevent this from happening again.

Homer is now in his new foster home with the Barnes' in Korea.

We LOVE the Barnes Family. They've fostered 23 dogs for us, including one foster fail named Buddy! Their first pug was Dunkin (now named Bernie) in March 2021. Five years later, and they are our prolific fosterer, and we appreciate them so much 💖

Homer is 2 years old. He had ACL surgery -- he was driving to the basket on a fast break when he hyperextended his knee, and it just gave out on him 🏀. Homer's basketball career is now over...but he can focus on finding his forever family when he comes to the US in the fall!!

And best believe I will be ordering this come June 18 for the Pug Rescue of Korea + Panda Express FUNDRAISER!

A reviewer: “I enjoyed the buttery-soft texture, slow-roasted taste, and the sweet, tangy, slightly fiery flavor of the sauce. The saucy, crispy, caramelized edges on each slice were spectacular.”

On Thursday, June 18, 2026, Panda Express locations nationwide are hosting a virtual fundraiser where 28% of sales will benefit us! 👏🏼

Here’s how:

🥡 Simply place your order online for pickup or delivery at www.pandaexpress.com or through the Panda Express app
