We are a 501c3 using evidence-based video and tools — with engaging pop culture references — to teach character development and behavioral health strategies in ways young people find relatable. The Coalition’s Heroic Journey Curriculum is the sole mental health and social emotional learning program officially used by YMCA of the USA for children and parents.
Mentally healthy, empathetic kids
are the key to driving positive change and creating a world of justice.
But research shows kids are often focused on more urgent issues: depression, anxiety, fear, shame, loneliness, addiction, and suicidal ideation.
Pop Culture Hero Coalition is the first 501c3 org to teach mental health / bullying prevention using heroic stories, which children and teens find relatable. Under the direction of award-winning author and Curriculum Director Carrie Goldman with the support of Chief Psychologist Dr. Janina Scarlet, our programs include creating equity, inclusion, and restorative practices over bullying, racism, misogyny, LGBTQIA2S+ bullying, cyberbullying, and other forms of injustice.
Using key research, our Curriculum is rooted CASEL’s principals for social emotional learning, including the prevention and treatment of bullying, discrimination, violence, and other forms of hate.
Partners include YMCA USA, the NOH8 Campaign, the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium, Feeding San Diego, and the United Nations Association San Diego. We have partnered with Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
The Coalition has brought the UN, Amnesty, ACLU, NOH8 Campaign, ADL, and Kiva to their first pop culture convention appearances. We are harnessing the phenomenon of stories kids love to teach heroism in real life.
We must act now, making mental health tools relatable and accessible — free of charge — to every child, teen, or parent, regardless of ability to pay.
We value your support!
