As our city considers critical choices for the upcoming fiscal year, these could affect emergency response and public safety resources that serve Alamitos Heights.
The proposed FY27 city budget includes major citywide reductions to address a $58.2 million General Fund deficit, directly impacting our local safety services:
Fire Engine 14 (Station 14): A proposal to eliminate the dedicated fire engine (the water pumper truck) stationed right in our community at 5200 E. Eliot St.(Just this week, a house fire broke out on Santiago Avenue, and Station 14 crew members responded within minutes to protect our neighbors! Removing Engine 14 would force primary firefighting responses to come from stations further away like Station 8 or Station 4, adding crucial minutes to emergency response times.)
Police Department Cuts (59 Positions): The proposed budget eliminates 59 police officer positions across the department. While the city aims to absorb many of these through existing vacancies and attrition, reducing total sworn headcount directly impacts patrol coverage and overall departmental bandwidth citywide.
Quality of Life Officers (4 Positions): A proposal to eliminate 4 dedicated Quality of Life officers who specialize in mental health outreach, homeless engagement, and neighborhood quality-of-life concerns. (The City of Long Beach recently released its 2026 Point in Time Count showing a 3.7% increase in homelessness. Now is not the time to reduce these specialized officers—with homelessness rising across the city, dedicated outreach personnel are needed more than ever.)
Let your voice be heard if you support or oppose these cuts.
The City of Long Beach is hosting a series of FY 2027 Budget Conversations, and residents are invited to share their ideas and priorities before the City's budget is finalized.
Whether you attend virtually or in person, your feedback can help shape City services and investments for the coming year.
