Today reminded me why community matters.
At nearly every CCity of Long Beach - Mayor's OfficeCouncil meeting, we review blighted properties brought before the Board of Aldermen. But itโs never just about overgrown grass or debris; thereโs often a deeper story. One of the hardships, aging, or someone simply falling through the cracks.
This morning, we cleaned up a property in Ward 2 that belonged to an elderly woman who recently passed away. The only person she had left was an elderly man living in McHenry, who is physically unable to manage the property in its condition. It had become overwhelming. But now, thanks to a team of , itโs a space he can help maintain, and a piece of her legacy that wonโt be lost to neglect.
I reached out to Alderman Jesse Allen and asked if he knew of a property that could use a little neighborly help, no money involved, just volunteers, equipment, and a shared desire to make Long Beach a better place to live. He had just the spot.
We were joined by ๐๐ ๐ฏ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ, including sailors from the Seabee Base, lawn care professionals like Seth from [insert business] and Treherns Helping Hands and everyday residents who showed up ready to work. Together, we cleared ๐๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ of debris using ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฑ ๐๐ก๐๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐๐ฐ๐ฌ, grit, and teamwork.
Alderman Jesse Allen, Alderman Timothy McCaffery, Mayor Tim Pierce, and Community Advocate Erika Long didnโt just stop by; they rolled up their sleeves and helped us tackle the mess.
This is just the beginning. My plan is to move through Long Beach ward by ward, identifying properties owned by disabled veterans, elderly residents, or others who simply need a hand. If you want to be part of this movement, reach out. Follow along. Letโs do something good for others. And Remember,
