Day 7: What Is Happening Between Vouchers and Rents?

Voucher payment standards must be high enough for people to find homes. If they are too low, property owners may not participate and a voucher may become nearly impossible to use.

But we should also ask whether some rents rise toward the maximum amount voucher programs can support.

How are voucher rents compared with similar apartments rented without assistance? How often are rent increases negotiated or denied? Do our two housing authorities share market information?

Vouchers did not create Santa Barbara County’s housing crisis. Limited supply, construction costs, wages, land-use decisions, and investment practices all contribute. That is why we need facts rather than assumptions.

Could the two housing authorities jointly request an independent review of voucher rents, payment standards, and market data?

The goal would be to keep homes accessible without allowing limited public funding to reinforce unreasonable rents.

This reflection is part of a 10-day PB Reflects series about Emergency Housing Vouchers, housing stability, and our countywide response. The purpose is not to assign simplistic blame. It is to ask what we can do now, what we can learn for the future, and how we can come alongside the individuals and families affected.

NEW SUNDAY NIGHT SERMON SERIES
**Espanol Abajo

SHINE: Light for Real Life
Living as light and salt in a broken, hurting, divided, and uncertain world.

Our world can feel dark, divided, painful, and uncertain. Our own lives can feel that way too. But Jesus meets us in the middle of real life - with all our questions, hurts, habits, fears, and struggles - and invites us to become people of hope.

You do not need to have everything figured out. Whether you are exploring faith, new to following Jesus, have been hurt by the church, or have believed for many years, there is a place for you.

Join us on Sunday nights for this new eight-week sermon series as we discover how ordinary people can carry the light, love, grace, and hope of Jesus into everyday life.

Come as you are. Bring your questions. Find community. Let’s learn to SHINE together.

Trae tus preguntas. Encuentra comunidad. Aprendamos juntos a BRILLAR.

What a great **Women’s Day at the H.U.B.** today!

We were honored to have **Santa Barbara County Supervisor Joan Hartmann and Alma Hernandez** stop by and spend some time with us and the incredible women who make Women’s Day such a special part of the H.U.B.

We were also so grateful to welcome **Crystal Moss from Mystique Salon de Beauté**, who generously shared her time and talents by providing haircuts for some of the women today. 💇‍♀️❤️

There’s something powerful about people simply **showing up**—sharing their time, their talents, a conversation, a laugh, or just being present.

That’s what Women’s Day is about.

It’s more than services or programs. It’s about **connection, dignity, belonging, and creating a space where women know they are seen, valued, and supported.**

Thank you, Supervisor Hartmann, Alma and Crystal, for showing up and being part of today. And thank you to everyone who continues to make Women’s Day at the H.U.B. such a welcoming community.

**Community is stronger when we show up for one another. 💜**

Day 6 - Housing Is Part of a Survivor’s Safety Plan

For someone who escaped domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, or exploitation, losing housing can mean much more than changing addresses.

Without sufficient income, a survivor may again become dependent on an unsafe partner, relative, employer, or acquaintance. The apparent choice may be between an unsafe home, a vehicle, a shelter, or the street.

When we help someone escape danger and establish a safe home, we must ensure that a funding deadline does not push that person back toward what they escaped.

Could every affected survivor receive confidential, trauma-informed outreach, safety planning, legal assistance, and specialized housing support before anything changes?

A generic notice cannot account for the danger facing an individual family. For many survivors, housing is what makes safety possible.

This reflection is part of a 10-day PB Reflects series about Emergency Housing Vouchers, housing stability, and our countywide response.

The purpose is not to assign simplistic blame. It is to ask what we can do now, what we can learn for the future, and how we can come alongside the individuals and families affected.
