Thanks to Greg Davis for letting us know about this large natural avalanche in the Mount Naomi Wilderness that crossed the summer trail in Smithfield Dry Canyon. The avalanche likely occurred around March 20, during the rapid melt caused by prolonged, extremely warm weather.

The Memorial service for Incident Commander Brett Waters will be at Brighton Highschool on March 28, 2026. Coffee and Condolences from 11:00am - 12:30pm Memorial service from 1:00pm - 2:00pm. Location is 2220 Bengal Blvd. Cottonwood Heights, UT. The memorial ceremony will be held indoors in the auditorium.

March 8, 2026: Heightened avalanche conditions exist, and human-triggered avalanches are possible on drifted slopes in mid- and upper-elevation terrain. Wet avalanches are also possible on steep slopes with saturated snow.
Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully. Ride one at a time in avalanche terrain.

Heightened avalanche conditions exist on slopes with poor snow structure that are steeper than 30 degrees, and people could trigger dangerous avalanches failing on a persistent weak layer buried 1 to 3 feet deep. Avalanche conditions are complex; evaluate the snow and terrain carefully.
