Boa Ogoi - montage

Video: John Reed
Music: Shane Jenkins – flute
Mike Iverson - banjo

The Bear River Massacre, also known as the Battle of Bear River and Massacre at Boa Ogoi, occurred January 29, 1863. It was the worst massacre of Native Americans in the West, but received little attention. The reported number of Shoshone tribe members slain varies anywhere from 250 to 490.
The Northwestern Shoshone and Bannock tribes have now obtained their land for a permanent interpretive site, on the hill, overlooking the highway on US Highway 91 NW of Preston, Idaho.

Honoring the Life and Service of
Ballard King Yeates.

81 years after his death, Utah World War II POW Ballard Yeates has returned to Utah. Yeates, grew up in Millville, Utah. He joined the Army in 1941 and was sent to the Philippines as a Technician 5th Grade. In 1942, when the U.S. surrendered the Bataan Peninsula, he was one of nearly 75,000 Filipino and American soldiers taken prisoner by the Japanese and subject to brutal treatment, including the Bataan Death March, which was a 65-mile march to the POW camps.

Yeates passed away in the Cabanatuan POW camp on July 29th, 1942, due to sickness, but his family wasn’t informed of his death until two years later. In 2023 the Yeates family received a call from the U.S. Army Repatriation Committee operating out of Hawaii, informing them that Yeates’ remains had been positively identified by the Defense POW MIA Accounting Agency. A DNA match was made thanks to a DNA sample provided by a family member.
