We said goodbye to our beloved Echo on Monday. I’m still not ready to write this, I’m still hurting so darn much. Echo reiterated to me that time, patience and understanding can heal many wounds. I do believe we mended her heart, mind and soul and I will take whatever solace I can gather from that. Echo found she could trust humans again, and with that melted away her daily aggressions at us. She would nicker softly at feeding time, gone was the open mouth lunging to bite as we attempted to feed her. The daily kicking out at us, ears pinned with head shaking had passed. We were able to get her horribly foundered hoofs comfortable in special shoes. I only wish I could have healed her poor broken body but the damage was beyond repair before she even arrived at Priceless Acres. The crush injuries she had sustained previously had already settled in with severe arthritis. Her metabolic issues were continuing to contribute to her repeat foundering. My amazing farrier and our entire team of fabulous vets concluded that it would not be fair to put Echo through another winter, with cold temperatures would come intense pain and constant discomfort. Although Monday was not planned, our vet asked me one question “How have her days been?” Her days have been nothing short of amazing, cantering in the lead of her heard to the barn, happy and relaxed. My vet then had one statement that really hit home, “Let her continue to have amazing days.” In other words, do not wait for a day of excessive pain, or other possible malady to arise. Give her that peace. Monday was a good day… and we let her pass. I told her to keep her fancy shoes and wear them like the princess she told me she had been before, as I kissed one last time. My heart is heavy, love carries consequences. Rescue is hard. The horse that made me question my sanity, took a piece of my heart with her when she galloped away, pain free and whole again over the rainbow bridge. We did the best we could for you dear Echo…Rest easy my love.
