Livonia AM Rotary

Livonia AM Rotary Our club meets weekly to socialize, discuss the needs of our community and the world around us, and to take action to address those needs. All Are Welcome.

We are the Rotary Club of Livonia AM. Our membership is made up of a diverse mix of “go-getters” from throughout southern Michigan (Professionals, Business Owners, Community Leaders, Veterans, Academics, Students, Retirees, and more). We all share the common desire to get involved in our community. Some for the camaraderie and socializing. Some for the opportunity to participate in a community imp

rovement project. While others for the personal development that comes from taking on a leadership role. Rotary provides these opportunities and many more! Please consider visiting our club.

Last weekend I had the chance to join the amazing group from the Livonia AM Rotary for their road cleanup and what a great way to spend a morning giving back to our community. 💙

Rotary is all about “Service Above Self,” and this group truly lives it. From community cleanups like this to supporting local initiatives, scholarships, and events, they are constantly finding ways to make Livonia better.

I often get asked how to get more involved locally, and Rotary is a fantastic place to start. They are always welcoming new faces who want to make a difference.

Personally, I’m really looking forward to officially joining when my kids are a little older and my schedule allows for it. In the meantime, I love being able to jump in, volunteer alongside them, and stay involved through opportunities like their volunteer corps . . . and of course, helping coordinate their Wine Night at the Spree 🍷

Thank you to everyone who came out for the cleanup and for everything you do to serve our community!

Wednesday February 18th, Sharon E. Sexton was our guest speaker at the Livonia A.M. Rotary weekly meeting. Sharon is a Detroit-based author, historian, TV personality, and storyteller whose work focuses on African American history, civil rights, and the lived experiences of Black Detroiters.
Sharon's enthusiastic presentation lit up the room as she recounted being present as a child during Dr. Martin Luther King's historic "I Have A Dream" speech. She shared some pages from one the books she authored, and explained how she discovered an important article in a Detroit library giving unsung details about the Underground Railroad. Sharon's work is privately funded.

Our speaker this past week was Veronica Cruz, President, Breaking Barriers for Kids & Families.

Breaking Barriers provides year-round access to essential items and nutritious food for qualifying families. Their initiative centers on seven strategically located food pantries, ensuring support is within reach for those who need it.

Veronica mentioned that Garfield School serves students aged 18 to 26 years. Across the hall from the school's greenhouse will be a clothing depot. If you have clothes, infant to adult, to donate, you can drop them off at the school. Just open the front door, and there is a donation box. The food pantry is a choice pantry, so families can pick out the food they want.

Breaking Barriers recently received seed money to purchase a large box truck to drive around the city and deliver food. This truck purchase is in the works.
