Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia will undergo a project led by Ducks Unlimited to restore natural tidal flow to two impounded wetlands that were historically salt marshes. This project will improve quality habitat for waterfowl and provide engineering support, design and contracting for the removal of a berm and two water control structures that currently isolate High Point Creek impoundment from Occoquan Bay, resulting in restoration of 68 acres of tidal wetland habitat.

By returning them to salt marshes, the wetlands will provide other benefits like quality wintering habitat for waterfowl and reduced flooding risks in neighboring communities. The refuge will continue to protect and enhance regionally important habitat for the bald eagle, migratory birds, and native wildlife and plant species along the tidal Potomac River. 📸Bill Wallen
