Spring is a popular time of year for homeowners to clean their yards and plan new landscaping. While working in the yard, keep these wildfire safety tips in mind.

-You can create firebreaks with stone or concrete walkways. Firebreaks prevent fire from spreading across the ground by interrupting the fire’s fuel source.

-Use your lawnmower to create defensible space. You can help protect your home each time you mow by starting at your house and working outwards, creating a fuel break around your home as you go. Keeping your mower’s discharge chute pointed away from your house will reduce the chance of flying debris damaging your house and keep grass clippings from piling up near your home.

-Know before you MOW:
Check your belts for excess wear and look for any shiny spots on the metal near your belts. These are indications that your belt is rubbing on another part of your mower, which can build up heat or lead to sparks.

-Overheated bearings are a common cause of equipment related wildfires. The blade spindles on your mower deck have high-speed bearings that require regular checks. Some mower decks have greaseable bearings that you can lubricate with a grease gun, while others have sealed bearings that were greased at the factory. If your mower has sealed bearings, the spindles still need to be checked frequently for wear to prevent overheating.

-Dead branches can burn hotter and are more easily ignited than live branches. They can also create wounds in your tree’s bark when they fall. Using proper pruning techniques to remove dead branches from your trees can help improve your tree’s health and reduce its vulnerability to wildfire. While you’re at it, consider pruning some of the lower branches to remove any ladder fuels and keep fire from spreading from grass or shrubs beneath your tree up into your tree’s canopy.
