So, a dam is near you. Now, what?

While dams provide significant benefits, they also come with risks. Flooding can happen around and downstream of dams even when they’re working as designed.

Dams are built across rivers and hold, divert, or regulate water. Water can be held back but eventually has to be released downstream.

Heavy rains can make for larger releases of water downstream, sometimes flooding areas closest to the waterway. More dangerous flooding can happen if an issue at the dam occurs.

While we work hard to keep dams safe, partnership is key to plan ahead and work together to keep people out of harm’s way.

Flood inundation maps, like those available on the National Inventory of Dams, are a tool to help us understand flooding that could happen and design safety strategies with others.

The USACE needs to implement a real time texting notification when generation starts. A horn blowing at the dam is simply not enough. Boaters, kayakers, waders are in danger when you are essentially creating a flash flood on the river. Please consider a better system of notification.

We all have a role in dam safety.

May 31 is National Dam Safety Awareness Day – a reminder that while dams can provide significant benefits, they also pose risks to nearby people and communities.

Dam safety programs are designed to keep watch over dams so they can keep floodwater away, move ships and goods on waterways, provide water and power, create recreation opportunities, and support fish and wildlife habitats.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for more than 750 dams nationwide and works year-round to monitor, inspect, maintain, and communicate about this infrastructure. Doing so helps us keep an eye on and address safety concerns.

But safety also depends on you! This May, we’ll share tips and tricks to find dams near you, know how flooding can happen, and ways to be safe on the water. Stay tuned!

Reeling in Change: Updates to Arkansas Game and Fish Regulations
🎙️ Host Trey Reid talks with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Deputy Director Ben Batten about new regulations passed at the April commission meeting that take effect July 1, aligning fishing and wildlife regulation start dates and guidebook releases.
They highlight the expansion of “blue ribbon” smallmouth bass streams from 2 to 10, with a one-over-15-inch smallmouth limit. They also discuss eliminating fish possession limits to simplify rules, clarifying how guides can transfer legally harvested fish to clients with documentation, and allowing bowfishing-style alligator harvest on private land. The episode covers lake renovation-related harvest changes at places like Wilhelmina, Poinsett, and Monticello, and provides an update on Lake Conway construction progress.

Accurate, sad, and well written. Thank you Regina Cantrell Co-owner Lindseys Resort. With the lake this low in April, Lord knows what we are in for this summer. We are working hard on getting the Sustainable River Program designation with The Nature Conservancy and the USACE but it is not going to happen this summer.

There’s a specific kind of silence on the Little Red River right now that should worry anyone who carries a fly rod. Usually, the sound of the river is a symphony of moving water—the rhythmic pulse of Greers Ferry Dam generating power, the gurgle over the shoals at Pangburn, and the steady push ...

There are some sections in this survey regarding trout fishing…including room for comments. You can skip sections you have no opinion about. Take the time to express your thoughts on trout fishing. The AG&FC does pay attention to these surveys.

AGFC is conducting a survey of proposed hunting, fishing and conservation regulations, and we'd like your input before the Commission votes on the proposals. Complete the survey by midnight March 6 to have your voice heard.
