A new National Health Law Program piece makes the case that doula care is a critical, underfunded tool for protecting pregnant and birthing people from the health impacts of climate disasters — from wildfire smoke and extreme heat to hurricanes and flooding. These risks land hardest on Black and low-income communities already burdened by environmental racism and redlining, and doulas are stepping in to fill the gap: helping clients evacuate safely, navigate water crises, and access resources like Medicaid-funded air purifiers. The piece calls for expanding Medicaid coverage for doula care (currently just 27 states plus D.C.) and building more climate-preparedness training pipelines for doulas.

Explore the Birth Justice Ecosystem Map and Capital Index, examine emerging trends across the field, and engage in conversations about philanthropy, community infrastructure, and the many forms of capital needed to sustain birth justice over the long term.

Move from insight to action through strategy sessions, leadership conversations, cross-sector dialogue, and collaborative planning focused on strengthening workforce durability, organizational stability, and community-based birth infrastructure.
