On this day in 1896, Michael Vincent died in his Little Canada home near County Rd C and Germain St at age 80. Michael married his wife Sophie in Canada sometime around 1845 and they had 11 children.

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day, a day that celebrates and honors Indigenous People throughout the United States. The location of Little Canada was first known as a seasonal campsite and trading location for the Kaposia tribe of Dakota. In fact, Benjamin Gervais found the location of his future home (and by extension Little Canada) on advice from friends of his from the tribe. It is easy to think of the history of Little Canada in terms of the history of settlers and onward, but the reality is that for thousands of years before, this land was already filled with rich, vibrant culture of local indigenous people.

Vital Guerin II was born in Saint Remi , Canada in 1831 and immigrated to St. Paul in 1862 (30 years after his father) with his wife Mary Boyer and their children. In the 1880s they moved to Little Canada and built a blacksmith shop and residence on Little Canada Rd near Round Lake. When their house burned down in the summer of 1892, Vital replaced it with an old school that was once on Lambert Lake. He disassembled the building, hauled the lumber by wagon back to his property, and re-assembled it to what is now 104 E Little Canada Rd. The Guerins lived in that building until they both passed away in 1912.

On this day in 1823 Ben Gervais married Genevive Laurence in a ceremony conducted by Bishop Provencher at Fort Gary, Manitoba. In about 20 years they would be settled in what we now call Little Canada. Throughout their marriage they demonstrated team work, commitment, and hard work.

On this day in 1924, funeral services for Lady Ann Clewitt Melancon were held at St. John's Church. She was the widow of C.M. Melancon, and mother of seven. Her lifetime from 1842-1924 saw Minnesota move from territory to state, the growth of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Civil War and WWI, and transportation shift from the Red River Carts through riverboats and trains to early planes.

The Fasciana family came to the United States from Italy in 1914. Salvatore and Concetta first settled in Dilworth, MN where 5 of their 10 children were born. Salvatore worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, but when they went on strike he moved to foundry work in Rochester, NY. They returned to Minnesota and settled in Little Canada in 1927. They originally leased the Nadeau farm, before purchasing land at 2392 Centerville Road in 1930. They farmed the four acre property for more than 45 years, specializing in raspberries, strawberries, cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, and onions. The family did most of the work by hand and with horses until the 1940s when they acquired a tractor and other farm implements to keep up with the work. Their land today is located in Pioneer Park, which was purchased from them by the City of Little Canada in 1989.
