On this day in 1885, Genevieve Laurence passed away at the age of 84. Alongside her husband Benjamin Gervais, she traveled from Canada to St. Paul, and eventually founded Little Canada. She had ten children and dedicated her life to her family, and we were honored to finally put a marker on her grave just a few short years ago. The story that Jon Vanek is currently writing about her life is still in the works, and we need your help! Donations help us pay for research costs locally and in Canada.

On this day in 1922 Al Ruemke purchased an acre of land on the north shore of Lake Gervais and began to build a cottage. Al and Lydia were originally from St. Paul and Al owned a garage on Bates Avenue. For the first five years, they only lived in the cottage during the summer months, but they winterized and added on when their children Beth and Alfred Jr. arrived. One year, the lake was so dry that Alfred planted corn on the shore and raised a good crop. They later built a house on top of the hill at 756 LaBore Road and lived there for many years until Alfred passed away; then Lydia moved back to the lake house. She was an active member of the Historical Society for many years until she passed away on June 3, 1984.

On this day in 1912, Clem Bougie was born in St. Paul. He grew up in Stillwater and later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. He married Gert Ducharme in 1939 and moved to Little Canada, living in the same house for over 50 years of marriage. Gert lived in the home her whole life as her father built it shortly after her birth. The home was first built where 35E currently runs and was moved to Condit Street when the freeway was built. Clem was a charter member of the Little Canada Fire Department and on the planning board or Little Canada for many years. He was also the Captain of the Rescue Squad for the Fire Department in the 1950s.

On this day in 1876, Angelique DeMers Lambert, widow of Abraham Lambert and mother of six, passed away at age 81. The Lamberts were some of the first to immigrate to Lake Gervais, coming from St. Boniface, Manitoba with the Ducharme family.

The Nadeau twins, Roy (right) and Gordy (left), were born in Little Canada on December 13, 1913 to Phil and Agnes (Plaus) Nadeau. Roy would grow up to serve three terms as Ramsey County Commissioner beginning in 1959. Gordy opened "Gordy's Place," a bar at 201 East Little Canada Road in 1936, and it remains there to this day.
