ROW Foundation Fights Epilepsy

ROW Foundation Fights Epilepsy Through 95 partnerships in 41 countries, ROW Foundation improves the lives of people living with epilepsy in under-resourced areas globally.

We envision "One World. One Standard.®” of care. 🌎 Epilepsy is a global problem that deserves a global solution.™

Most people with epilepsy in high-income countries gain seizure control with medication, but access to epilepsy care is not common across most of the world. 39 million people (out of 65 million people with epilepsy worldwide) live with untreated seizures because they can't access tre

atments commonly available in countries like the U.S. We're working to change this. ROW (“Rest of World") Foundation is the social enterprise partner of OWP Pharmaceuticals, a marketer of epilepsy and psychiatric medications. OWP medication donations and public donations to ROW Global Health fuel the work of ROW Foundation. ROW improves epilepsy care in under-resourced regions globally by supporting:
• Training opportunities for healthcare providers
• EEG equipment & telemedicine for diagnosis
• Ongoing grants of anti-seizure medication

We believe everyone should have access to the same quality of epilepsy care, no matter where they live. ROW Foundation earned the Candid | GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency, granted to only 0.5% of non-profits on GuideStar: https://www.guidestar.org/profile/shared/9e21dba5-9430-4967-86d6-6e5833b4318a

Epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease (AD) share a bidirectional relationship. According to the Cleveland Clinic, people with have a three- to four-fold increased risk of developing AD. Having AD increases the risk of seizure onset and epilepsy later in life.

Though common, epilepsy can be challenging to diagnose in AD patients. "Seizures in the elderly tend to be shorter, with fewer motor features than younger subjects. Seizures are usually non-convulsive and with impaired awareness or confusion, which may be misattributed to aging or mistaken for medication side effects, cognitive impairment, or psychiatric disorders."

Another study indicated that since "non-convulsive seizures may be masked by cognitive impairment, detection of epileptic-like activity may require long-term EEG monitoring. Long-term EEG recording, including during sleep, may result in a higher diagnostic rate." In many cases, abnormal electrical activity in the brain is present and may be observed with long before the onset of cognitive impairment or seizures.

CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda is one of Africa’s leading pediatric hospitals for brain surgery and the treatment of neurological conditions. Initially treating , spina bifida, and encephalocele, now 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐄 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 also offers a comprehensive pediatric surgery program. In April, they celebrated 25 years of service with the inauguration of a new 13,300 ft² surgical center.

The hospital's reach extends beyond the city of Mbale (Eastern Region) with regular remote clinics in six locations across Uganda, including Kampala. In May, 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐄 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 collaborated with Usratuna Rehabilitation Centre (Juba) and Aviation Fellowship to transport 10 pediatric patients requiring urgent neurosurgical intervention to Mbale from South Sudan.

Since 2017, we have provided ongoing supplies of anti-seizure medications to support CURE's young patients. Along the way, we've assisted the hospital in obtaining upgraded equipment for diagnostics and inter-operative neurological monitoring ( ). ROW Foundation is proud to support 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐄 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 and the children it serves!
