It’s no secret that I love rodeo kids. They’re hard workers and tough as nails, but also kind and polite (most of the time.) And even though they’re the coolest, this post isn’t about the kids. It’s about rodeo parents, and how awesome they are.

There are a multitude of youth events that happen all over the country during the summer months. Just like in any sport, there are kids of every age and skill level that participate. Some of them are horse, farm, or ranch kids, and some of them (like me) grew up in a neighborhood, living for the chance to take a riding lesson once a week.

One of the unique things about equine events is that living “equipment” is involved. Just like there are different levels of experience and skill when it comes to the kids, there are parents who have varying degrees of knowledge and familiarity with horses. Those parents and kids also come from a variety of financial and domestic situations.

Youth rodeo is expensive, and there’s no two ways about it. You can absolutely budget and spend your money carefully, but at the end of the day, this stuff just costs a lot. Feed bills, vet bills, gas money, and entry fees all add up, especially if you’re paying for more than one kid to do it.

Several times this summer, I’ve seen someone reach out for help in an online group of rodeo parents. In one situation, a single parent at a weeklong rodeo finals event was expressing frustration that someone had “borrowed” most of a bale of hay that she had just bought from in front of her kid’s stall. Within seconds, another parent immediately implored her not to let that ruin her kid’s week, because they had an extra bale she could have. And it just kept going. More and more parents volunteered to share their hay or buy another bale for her kid’s horse. So many of them saw a need and immediately wanted to help.

Today I saw a post made by a parent at a weeklong youth barrel race. Understanding that things happen and unexpected expenses occur, she asked people to private message her if they needed but couldn’t afford extra shavings for their horses, offering to purchase and deliver them to their stalls tomorrow morning, no questions asked. I don't know that woman personally, but that sounds like a good human who may have received help in a tight spot before and wants to pay it forward.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a family lend a horse to another kid who needed to make a run to stay in a points chase or try to get qualified for finals. We had the opportunity to do it more than once, and it made my heart so happy. My kids have also needed to jockey a borrowed horse, and I’ll forever be grateful to the families who made that happen.

So, yeah, rodeo kids are great, but so are the parents who showed them how to be the kind of folks who take care of each other. ❤️
