Our very own Chairperson Jiromi Corona was recently quoted in an article by Nebraska Public Media after she spoke at the Lincoln City Council meeting in support of an ordinance to maintain a $15 per hour minimum wage in the city

“I am outraged. Are youth and young adults not equal to everyone else? I have fought to have a seat at the table with adults by being on the Lincoln Youth Action Board, I am helping change the homeless system for youth and young adults,” she said. “With my lived experience, youth and young adults who are homeless or facing abuse in their parents' homes will be there longer because they are earning less. Youth and young adults are being told they are less by lawmakers.”

With storm season in Nebraska upon us, now is a good time to refresh on the Replacement SNAP policy regarding outages and natural disasters.

When food purchased with SNAP or Summer-EBT benefits is destroyed, due to an individual or natural disaster, the household may request/be eligible for replacement SNAP benefits for the value of the destroyed food

📌Replacements are provided only if a household reports the loss within 10 days of the date the food purchased with EBT is destroyed
📌The actual value of food loss that was purchased with SNAP benefits, not to exceed the household's one-month SNAP allotment, may be replaced
📌For a household to be eligible for replacement SNAP benefits due to loss of power, the power must have been off for more than four hours for refrigerated foods and twenty-four hours for frozen food

Requests can be made over the phone, in person, or by completing the online form and returning it to DHHS within 10 days from the disaster or from when the power was restored.

During the public hearing on my ordinance to restore the voter approved minimum wage, residents from across Lincoln shared how wages impact mental health, stability, dignity, and survival.
