I’m anti-school voucher.
I’m anti-ESA.
I’m anti-taxpayer-funded homeschool.

I’m a second generation homeschooler.
I’m a former single-mom homeschooler.
I’m a working-mom homeschooler.

I’m a taxpayer.

Now that I got that out of the way, I’m here to report that since we passed the ESA in Texas, we have homeschool moms asking for ideas on how to spend their thousands.

They applied for the money without actually knowing what they would spend it on.

That was meant for curriculum, right? You needed help homeschooling, right?

But now you have multiple thousands of dollars, and you need a list of ideas. So you buy things that taxpayers should not be subsidizing: backpacks, fancy pens, music, and programs you didn’t need and never heard of before.

I’ve seen one too many Facebook posts about this. I’m not making this up.

When veteran homeschoolers actively campaigned against this, we saw this coming. We knew that homeschooling could be done on a dime, because we’ve been there. We knew that waste is rampant in government programs of every kind. We knew it would be taken advantage of. We knew that the taxpayers would have to fund ridiculous shopping list items.

We knew.

And we also know that after all this, our homeschool freedom will be chiseled away, slowly, bit by bit, and the expense of someone’s free math book, wipe-off markers, and a cool backpack.

As a “veteran” homeschool mom, and now Grandma 😁, I can confidently say that those fears and doubts happen to all of us at some point…I have also learned that that those fears and doubts are a result of listening to the “negative noise” from those who are living rent free in your head. You got this!!!

Chesterton's Fence: don't remove a barrier until you understand why it exists.

The right of families to direct their children's education was fought for in courtrooms & in legislatures, by parents who refused to hand that authority over.

Every government funding program that comes with "just a few requirements" is a hand on that fence.

Know what you're opening before you add a gate or take down the fence completely.

Some tips/reminders for you as you start your school year as a homeschool mom or dad:

1) Guard your mind from outside noise. Everyone will have an opinion about everything from curriculum to socialization and testing......PRAY about and FOR your family, know YOUR children and build a homeschool system that works best for YOUR family.

2) Relationship over Schedule. I have often said don't be neglectful but also don't be a slave to a schedule; adjust each day as needed.

3) Don't try to recreate "institutionalized school" at home. Homeschooling offers you so much freedom, USE IT! Run with it! Everyday situations can become teachable moments about how to navigate real life.

4) Don't be afraid to change what isn't working. Curriculum is a TOOL, not a dictator or a master. If it isn't working, ditch it, change it, use it differently, but above all, don't become a slave to it.

5) Keep your eyes on the Big Picture. Some of the most important things you will teach your children (i.e. THE GOSPEL) may not appear in a textbook or curriculum or even on a transcript.

If God is the head of your home and homeschool, you will not fail!!

Since 2019, the number of kids being educated at home in the state has almost doubled. Many parents point to the COVID-19 pandemic as a catalyst for the growth.
