What's Your Excuse Wednesday?

We hear all the time - can you trap for me, I can't do it (or won't). Sometimes, this is truly the case - and yes, we will help, and we will trap. Because that's what we do.

Then...we get these moments...this couple needed help. Their "herd" was growing, and they couldn't afford to TNR the number of cats that were there (27, if memory serves). And, it's clear that mobility is an issue for her, and her husband is on a scooter. But...then we see this. While she can't lift the traps, she monitors them, covers them and lets the team know when she has a cat in a trap.

She is so ridiculously grateful, as are we, to Lincoln Animal Ambassadors and their partnership for the Barn Cat Program that they brought to life with us this year. Because of a single donor, we are making a dent in the farm, acreage and barn locations in and around Lincoln and Lancaster County, Nebraska.

Successful trapping and containment is driven by ONE thing. Caretaker cooperation. Feeding on schedule, in the right place, and being a part of the effort is how we can stop the reproduction and improve the lives of the cats that are spayed/neutered & vaccinated.

We're hoping that we can continue our efforts, but want to stress that it shouldn't be the burden of one person to fund the efforts. We're lucky to have the special donor - but, we have a LOT of cats to get to!

Help us continue not just now, but in the FURture!

One of the things we do...

When we started The Purrpose, we knew we wanted to build a sanctuary for feral and "un" cats - unloved, unwanted, unhealthy, unsocial, unwell, unlikely to survive a shelter or continued community life.

However, this was not something that we could jump out of the gate and do. We knew that we had to be strategic and plan for the FURture. This meant ensuring that every cat that could get home - could.

In April 2024, we hosted the first ever feline only microchip clinic, in partnership with All Feline Hospital. Since then, we have been able to provide over 400 microchips at low or no cost to pets across our communities.

With that being an important part of who we are, we also recognized that there was a gap in the rescue/missing pet space. While we can't jump in and help with every cat that goes missing, we do our best to do it when and where we can. Last Tuesday, Fivo slipped through the door when his family was getting furniture delivered. He beelined for the gutter, and was stuck.

Yes, in most cases a cat can get back out of a gutter, but for many reasons, this was not the case for Fivo. His humans knew where he was, and they kept hearing him...and we moved in. With our field cams, traps and a dedicated team focused on recovery, we were ELATED when we saw him on camera. We then knew where the traps needed to be, and within 12 hours of starting our efforts - Fivo was back home with his family.

We let everyone get a few zzz's and snuggles, loves and tears - and then we came back. Fivo, Bebes, and Craig all got microchips. While a microchip wasn't going to get Fivo out of the gutter, we know now that if he slips out the door - or any of his buddies - they will have that microchip. They will get back home.

They will never need a shelter. They will never not be able to get back home. They will ALWAYS have a connection back to the family that loves them.

We THANK YOU for being with us on our crazy, incredible and growing journey. Rescue looks different depending on the circumstances. And we get to be a part of it in so many different ways because of the support our community gives us.

We want to keep growing. We want to keep rescuing. We want to keep moving to that place where the sanctuary becomes a reality.

Oh Marm...SEVERAL years ago, our Head Meow found Cole & Marmie, and started following Cat Man Chris. It was through him that the inkling of community cats took hold in her brain.

It wasn't until February 14, 2024 that she got bit by the TNR bug.

With that in mind, please take a moment to thank anyone you know that engages in Community Cat Care, TNR, or rescue. It is these people that we know we stand on their coat tails and aspire to be the difference in our own communities.

RIP Marmalade - we are so glad that Cole gave you more time with your humans, and continued to inspire so many during your journey on earth.

(Quick note - this isn’t “our” Marmie…this is the OG guy who was such an inspiration to our Head Meow!!)

MARMALADE 🌈🐾

7/1/2013 - 10/10/2026

At 7:12pm Cole came and guided Marm over the rainbow bridge with him. Thankfully, he was at home being cuddled with us both as he transitioned.

We are in shock still and will update more later…

Hug your furkids extra from us today 🖤🧡

PURRLease meet Tony!

Tony was a dumpee that needed a soft heart and action oriented rescue. She was left behind at Tractor Supply Co. here in Lincoln, NE and the employees there knew she needed help.

With great thanks to Brave Animal Rescue TNR, she was able to get to the vet quickly and...because of the trauma she had endured (we believe she was either kicked/abused, or hit by a car), she would never have lived through birth. The uterus and placentas were torn and not connected...

Now, with the kind heart, soft touch and gentle love, Tony is finding out that being a cat is her best life. But...now she needs her furever home. Her foster momma needs you to know these things about her...

🦐 She is food motivated!

🦶🏻 She is hesitant about feet...start out by moving slow around her. She may not have had a good experience with someone who wasn't kind.

🫳 She likes a good head scratch and rub! And...be prepared...she has pre-determined how long you should scratch, and if she's not done, she'll let you know!

🐈‍⬛ She is comfortable around other cats! She may not be super close with any of them, but she exists as the queen that she is, and is happy to watch over those that worship her!

🦴 She doesn't mind dogs! Once again, she chooses to be worshipped by all, and the world is on her terms...but she is a cat...what might one expect?

😻 She will sit in your lap, accept your gracious offering of chin scritches, head and ear rubs. She'll sleep happily beside you and gratefully accept your offering of goodnight head loves.

What we know about this beauty is that she is comfortable chasing and managing mice. She was doing a great job at Tractor Supply, but, she has also very much accepted that being inside is a good thing. She deserves love, patience and someone that will respect her need to trust again.

Her rescuer, her angel has done aMEOWzing things for her. She's ready for THAT home that will give her the love, kindness, patience and love that she deserves after such a close call with death.

Are you that person? Are you HER PURRson? Send us an DM, or email us at [email protected] and we'd be happy to arrange conversations with her rescuer.

Every cat deserves a chance. Not every cat needs to be inside, but some need the opportunity to thrive. Tony is one of those cats.

Purrlease meet Saffron...

Why do we want to share her specifically? The folks that found her, found her when she was caring for her litter of kittens. They were able to get the kittens to PURRmanent homes, but, wanted to do the right thing for her.

While in surgery, it was found that she had a pyometra. A pyometra can develop from a variety of different things: cysts form in the uterus due to an increase in hormones, resulting in cysts; bacterial growth - the thickened uterine lining secretes fluids and blocks white blood cells, creating a breeding ground for bacteria to ascend into the va**na and uterus (infection!!); contraction failure - because of the high hormone levels, the uterine muscles don't contract properly and the fluid and pus - or feti - cannot be expelled, resulting in infection.

(There will be a picture in the comments - warning...it is a graphic photo.)

The ONLY solution to saving her is spay. This removes the uterus, the infection, the cyst, the reabsorbing fetus, and the removal of the infection.

Once again, .

1️⃣She would have died from this.
2️⃣Her death would have been painful, and devastaing.
3️⃣She could still have gotten pregnant - and would have died in birth - and she would not have been able to care for the kittens - and they would have died.
4️⃣Responsibility stops this pattern.

It IS our responsibility to step up. It IS our community. It IS our humanity that makes us able to be a part of the solution.

How can you help, or be a part of the solution?
🐈‍⬛Fix YOUR cat. Can't afford it? Ask for help. It's out there.
🐈If you are feeding cats at your home, farm, neighborhood, gas station...make sure every one of them are fixed. That glorious left ear tip tells you that the amount of food you have to buy will NOT increase.
🐈‍⬛Be a part of TNR - if you are feeding, check out or borrow a trap! Most communities can point you in the right direction for low-cost TNR surgeries. OR, there are programs that will even pay for it!
🐈Monitor the cats you're feeding - if you have new residents - get them fixed ASAP!
🐈‍⬛You don't have a cat, and you're not feeding a cat - but you want to help...

💲💲💲DONATE 💲💲💲

Whether it's to us, or your favorite cat non-profit, every single dollar matters.

Coming into the end of the year, TNR advocates know that NOW is the time when we need to be putting the pedal down on our efforts. Every cat we TNR right now, and throughout the winter, will ensure that we have fewer kittens in the spring.

As non-profit organizations - whether rescue, shelters or TNR - we have to partner together, collaborate and plan for everything. WE know that we couldn't do what we do without our partners - Beatrice Humane Society , The Cat House , The Phoenix Remix Animal Rescue, Lincoln Animal Ambassadors, Brave Animal Rescue, Guardians For Felines and so many more! What I love about all of these organizations is that they see - and live - the value of TNR and spay & neuter.

Together - we can solve this crisis.

We need your help - however you can give it.

We love sharing! We love educating! We want to do more!

What should we share? What do you want to know more about? There are a lot of things that people think...

"hmmm...what should I do..."

"why did they do that..."

"where should I ask for help..."

"why doesn't someone else do...."

We'll do our best to share what you want to know, and to address issues, concerns or other things that community (feral, unsocial and free-roaming) cats face!

Trigger warning - kitten death and spay/abort.

It's that simple. Instead of the normal statistic of 75% of all kittens will die when born outside and without veterinary care - the statistic for this litter is 100%. And, we haven't seen the momma since.

What could have prevented this? Spay and neuter. Period.

This is why we have to talk about spaying known and unknown pregnant community cats. Any TNR focused organization, and in most cases, shelters, will choose this option. It's not a preference. It's not the desire. It's not the wish. It's the reality of the circumstances. It is not a reflection on our morals.

It is a reflection of our ethics.

There has never been a time that a conversation has been had, "Oh! That was great! We got to do a spay abort!" Instead, the conversation is - 'Wow, this poor 10 month old kitten had 5 kittens...thank goodness she is going to have a chance to both live, and live as a healthy cat without the risk of dying trying to give birth and then take care of these kittens." (Please note, there is no exclamation point behind that sentence.)

The pictures that are shown in the comment section are the reality of what happens when a female cat didn't ask to have babies, but had them because it's the way cats work when they have hormones.

Guess what - without the hormones, this does not happen. Instead, they get to be the creatures that they were made and over time, developed to be. Hunters, lap huggers, emotional support animals, neighborhood rodent control, catnip inspectors...

Life is valuable. Every single life. The only type of birth control that we can offer a cat is spay/neuter. As humans, we have 100% control over this. We have 100% control over whether or not a female cat gets pregnant. Whether you're directly hands on with TNR, or adopting from a rescue or shelter that ensures that the cat is altered before adoption, or you support a non-profit that helps individuals spay & neuter cats. WE can literally fix this.

The volunteer that found these kittens - she knew that the female cat had delivered kittens. We couldn't get her trapped before it happened and I know that she, as well as our Head Meow, feels responsible for this.

We will grieve these 3 - maybe 4 lives - and we will bring this colony to containment. Our motto? When and where we can, NO CAT LEFT BEHIND.

RIP sweet babies. We will try harder.
