When medications are flushed, trashed, or poured down the sink, they don't simply vanish. Most water treatment facilities aren't designed to filter out pharmaceuticals, which means trace amounts of medications can end up in Nebraska's rivers, lakes, and groundwater.

The impact? Studies have shown that pharmaceuticals in waterways can affect fish reproduction, disrupt wildlife hormones, and move up the food chain in ways we're still learning about.

Culligan reports that concerns over tap water quality are rising as new contaminants like PFAS and microplastics are discovered, prompting increased scrutiny and regulatory attention.

The Nebraska Environmental Trust funds part of our program, and Nebraskans are at risk of losing free & proper medication disposal. Thank you, Lancaster County District Judge Susan Strong, for halting this.
