This week, two Braver Angels members attend a town hall held by congressmen Mike Flood. In our efforts, we observed shouting, name calling, and overall a heated conversation. By implementing the Braver Angels Way into these types of civic discussion, there is more room for those present to truly listen and acknowledge one another. On a recent Saturday, thirty people representing various political perspectives met at the Millard Public Library. They were enticed with this idea: that it might be possible to engage in civil conversations across political divides.

The main event was a "speed friending" activity in which participants took two minutes each to answer questions ranging from "What are some values from your childhood that still matter to you today?" to "What makes you proud of your country?" Attendees reported how good it felt to reflect on and to talk about subjects they rarely talk about with others who may or may not vote the same way they do.

One participant remarked, “I CAN learn to listen differently with my son.” They committed to taking a Braver Angels e-course on Families & Politics. Another participant who lives in two states vowed to look up an Braver Angels Alliance in their other state of residence with the aim to talk up the experience up with family members and their church. Making a difference...one conversation at a time.

On the stage: two congressmen from opposite parties, Tom Suozzi and Brian Fitzpatrick, alongside the everyday citizens of our Citizens Commission on Immigration who are moving an issue Washington has been stuck on for decades.

Twenty-three leaders who disagree on many things said yes to the same thing this month.
They agreed to stand together, publicly, behind the idea that Americans can hold fast to their convictions while staying genuinely curious about the convictions of people on the other side. That's it. That's the commitment.
Today, we're honored to introduce the inaugural Braver Angels Advisory Council—a remarkable group of elected officials, scholars, journalists, civic leaders, authors, entrepreneurs, and advocates who bring different perspectives but share a belief in the dignity, worth, and value of every person.
