This week’s Spotlight shines on West Sixth Brewing, a Lexington business that has made giving back part of its mission from day one.

Since opening in 2012, West Sixth has supported Kentucky nonprofits through programs like Sixth for a Cause, the Wooden Nickel Program, and Pay It Forward Cocoa Porter. Through these efforts, the company has donated more than $1 million to organizations across the Commonwealth, helping causes focused on hunger relief, education, environmental stewardship, and community development.

What makes West Sixth special is that community service is not just an occasional project. It is part of who they are. Through nonprofit partnerships, fundraising events, and customer-driven giving opportunities, they create meaningful ways for people to support local causes while connecting with their neighbors.

Their example reminds us that businesses can do more than provide a product or service. They can invest in people, strengthen communities, and inspire others to make a difference.

Thank you, West Sixth Brewing, for answering the call to care.

This week, we’re recognizing Rose Garden Home Mission.

Located in Covington, the Rose Garden Home Mission serves women and children experiencing homelessness by providing not only shelter, but stability, dignity, and a path forward. Through supportive housing, daily structure, and a focus on long-term growth, they walk alongside residents as they rebuild their lives.

Their work reflects a deeper commitment to community. It is not just about meeting immediate needs, but about creating space for healing, independence, and hope.

In a state where many families face housing insecurity, places like the Rose Garden Mission remind us what it looks like to show up with consistency and care.

If you are looking for a way to get involved, consider supporting their work through a donation or by volunteering your time.

We are grateful for those who open their doors and continue walking with others, one step at a time.

This week, we’re highlighting Hunger Doesn’t Take a Spring Break, a community effort helping ensure Lexington children have access to meals during spring break.

From April 6–10, free lunches will be available from 11:30–1:00 at seven locations across the city, along with activities for kids. Sites include Charles Young Center, Douglass Park, Dunbar Center, Green Acres Park, M.L.K. Park, Tates Creek Community Center, and Coolavin Shelter.

Now in its fourth year, this effort is led by Council Member Tyler Morton - Lexington's 1st District and supported by community partners like Kroger. Together, they expect to serve around 3,500 meals, reaching roughly 100 children at each site.

When school is out, many children lose access to consistent meals. This is what it looks like when a community steps in to meet that need.

If you know a family who could benefit, please share this information so every child who needs a meal knows where to go.

Care looks like making sure kids are fed.

This week, we’re recognizing Grounded All Day Cafe.

During the January winter storm, when conditions were at their worst, their team chose to show up for the community. In partnership with Catholic Action Center, they helped serve neighbors experiencing homelessness, making sure people had food during a difficult time.

They also opened their doors to volunteers, turning their cafe into a space for action. Together, they made more than 1,700 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, feeding over 300 people. At the same time, they offered free coffee to emergency workers, including road crews, police, and firefighters, who were working long hours to keep others safe.

In moments like that, care becomes visible.

We are grateful for businesses that step beyond their walls and into the needs of their community.

Sometimes caring looks like something simple. Sitting beside a child. Listening to their stories. Showing up for them again and again.

Organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass remind us how powerful that kind of care can be. When a child has a trusted adult cheering them on, encouraging them, and helping them see their own potential, it can change the direction of their life.

So many kids in our community are waiting for someone who will believe in them and invest a little time in their future. One caring adult can make all the difference.

If you have ever felt called to pour into the next generation, this might be your moment. Learn more about how you can volunteer, donate, or support their mission at https://www.bbbs-bluegrass.org/

Sometimes the greatest impact starts with simply showing up. 💙

This week, we’re recognizing Second Mile Behavioral Health LLC.

Their work is focused on meeting the needs of the clients they serve each day by offering therapy, case management, and community support to individuals and families across Kentucky.

When asked why this work matters, their answer was clear. They are built on Matthew 5:41, which says, “If anyone compels you to go with them one mile, go two.” Their commitment is to go beyond what is expected and to show up with consistency and compassion.

Mental and behavioral health support strengthens children, families, and entire communities. We are grateful for those who choose to walk that second mile.

Care starts with showing up. They do it every day.

Nearly one in five children in Fayette County experiences food insecurity. For some students, that means carrying unpaid lunch debt.
Dahlhus Fudge has already raised over $20,000 to help pay down lunch balances for Fayette County Public Schools students. He hosts the Feed the Kids 3K each September, and this year his goal is clear: pay off every student lunch debt in the county.
Now he’s hosting a Spring Trivia Night at Mirror Twin Brewing to continue that work.
Come be part of the Called to Care team for a night of fun, community, and real impact for local kids. Bring a friend. Fill a table. Show up.
Because caring is something we do together.

We’re beginning something simple and steady.

Care in Action: Sunday Spotlight is a weekly space where we pause to recognize people across Kentucky who are choosing to show up for children, families, and communities.

Each week, we’ll highlight individuals, businesses, and organizations doing the small, consistent work that often happens quietly and without recognition. The bus driver who stays late. The business owner who gives back. The volunteer who never asks for credit.

This is not about promotion or politics. It is about gratitude, shared responsibility, and the belief that caring for our kids and communities belongs to all of us.

If you know someone who is putting care into action, we’d love to hear about them.

Because showing up still matters.

11 teachers and friends gathered around a shared belief: Kentucky’s children matter.

Thank you to the educators and community members who showed up, leaned in, and committed to being part of something bigger than any one of us. Your willingness to listen, collaborate, and take action speaks volumes.

We may come from different backgrounds and perspectives, but we are united in one purpose: making sure the children of Kentucky are cared for, supported, and protected.

This is how it starts.
With people who care.
With conversations that matter.
With a commitment to stay at the table.

Grateful for each of you. Let’s keep going.
