Our land is a part of our identity, and our rich soils have contributed to the overall economic success of the Bluegrass region since European explorers and settlers arrived in the late 18th century.
But the story of the Bluegrass began long before Lexington was known as The Horse Capital of the World, and long before Daniel Boone first crossed the Appalachian mountains.
Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we recognize and honor the Shawnee and Cherokee communities who came before us, and whose histories, cultures, and connections to this land are an important part of our regionโs history.
