🪨🌧️ What is a Dry River Bed?

A dry river bed, also called a dry creek bed, is a landscaping feature designed to guide rainwater naturally through your yard during heavy storms. Most of the time it stays dry, but during rainfall it helps slow runoff, reduce erosion, and prevent standing water.

Beyond being functional, dry river beds can become beautiful focal points in the landscape while supporting a more natural, low-maintenance yard design.

Benefits of a Dry River Bed:
💧 Helps control drainage and erosion
🌱 Reduces muddy or soggy areas
🪨 Adds texture and natural beauty
🦋 Pairs beautifully with native plants and pollinator gardens
🏡 Creates movement and interest in the landscape

Great South Carolina companion plants include:
• Muhly Grass
• Blue Flag Iris
• River Oats
• Soft Rush
• Cardinal Flower
• Swamp Milkweed

Tips for success:
✔️ Use varying rock sizes for a natural look
✔️ Add curves instead of straight lines
✔️ Include larger anchor stones or boulders
✔️ Plant along the edges to soften the appearance

Dry creek beds are a great example of working with nature instead of against it, especially during South Carolina’s heavy summer rains. ☔🌿

In light of all the rain we've gotten....let's talk Rain Gardens!

🌧️💧 What is a Rain Garden? 🌿🐝

A rain garden is a shallow planted area designed to collect and absorb rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, sidewalks, and lawns. Instead of water rushing into storm drains, a rain garden slows it down naturally and helps filter pollutants before they reach local waterways.

Why are rain gardens important?
🌱 Reduce erosion and standing water
🦋 Support pollinators and wildlife
💧 Help recharge groundwater
🌼 Add beauty with native plants
🌎 Improve water quality in our community

The best rain gardens use deep-rooted native plants that can handle both wet and dry conditions. In South Carolina, great options include:
• Joe Pye W**d
• Blue Flag Iris
• Swamp Milkweed
• Cardinal Flower
• Muhly Grass
• Black-Eyed Susan

Rain gardens do not have to be large or complicated. Even a small garden can make a big impact!
