Urban Forest Initiative

Urban Forest Initiative The Urban Forest Initiative (UFI) seeks to enhance the quality and perception of urban forests in KY! Why Lexington? The tree in your yard benefits us both.

UFI works to encourage people living in urban spaces to have an appreciation for the nature that exists all around them, particularly our wonderful collection of urban trees! One of the ways that we do this is through our Adopt-A-Tree program, which gives individuals and groups the opportunity to show local trees a little love! Why Adopt-a-Tree?
>Simple and free
>Learn to measure a tree
>Fun group

or team-building exercise
>Estimate ecosystem benefits of your favorite tree
>Join in creating a “tree keeper” community in the Bluegrass, share your love of trees! The majority of the urban trees in Lexington are on private property. This includes all of the homes and businesses in our community. Promoting the beauty and benefits of our urban trees is a group effort. The trees in all of our yards make up the urban forest. A healthy urban forest is a real possibility, one that starts with awareness of its benefits by the us, the community. Find us on Twitter and Instagram !

🌳 It’s time to plant the seeds for Tree Week 2026!

Join UFI for our first planning meeting of the year next Wednesday, May 20, 10–11am on Zoom.

Whether you’ve organized a Tree Week campaign in your community before, or you’re curious about hosting an event for the first time, this is the meeting for you.

During this meeting, we will:
🌱 Discuss the overall purpose and goals of Tree Week
🌱 Review our “How to Host a Tree Week Event” guide
🌱 Walk through the event registration process
🌱 Discuss event marketing strategies
🌱 Brainstorm how to build on the great successes we saw in 2025

DM us or email [email protected] to get the Zoom link. We can’t wait to grow this with you!

Note: Here at Urban Forest Initiative we equip folks to plan Tree Week events both throughout Kentucky and on UK’s campus. If you’re based in Lexington or Louisville, those communities have their own independent Tree Week organizing committees. Check ‘em out!

And just like that, CANOPY CON 26 is in the books! We couldn’t be more grateful for the day we had together learning on our theme “Healthy Trees –Healthy People,” and how tree health and human health are not only intertwined, but vital to community well-being.

Many thanks to our amazing morning speakers and afternoon field of demonstrators. And of course, thank you to everyone who attended. Canopy Con wouldn’t be the premier conference on urban and community forestry in Kentucky without alls of you!
