Our Story...

The Living History Foundation (LHF) is a community-oriented organization based in Austin, TX. Our mission is to teach emerging young interpreters how to research and interpret the stories of people of color, women, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. In doing so, prove our ancestors shared many of the same dreams and aspirations we all do today. Our programs inc

lude (TEKS) Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards, required learning for Texas students grade kindergarten to 12th. And to make what we do even more impactful, we try to incorporate (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math topics in all our programs. Our programs are interactive, open-ended, and include activities, stories, and a visual display. We can set up indoors or out, and we don't need a P/A system or electricity. Simply stated, we are storytellers, and to help tell our stories, we wear the clothing and bring display items from the era we portray. We believe there is nothing more important than to approach history as close to real life as possible. One day, our children will inherit the world our ancestors had envisioned. Until then, let's give them the tools they will need to help make this a better world for all. Preserving a Legacy

Hello Facebook friends and family,

Today we are in Belton getting ready for the Legends of the Chisholm Trail. After setting up, Adam, the event organizer, surprised us with some special challenge coins commemorating the event.

I was already impressed when I saw the front of the coin, but then Adam asked us to flip them over and I was truly amazed. On the back was the picture we took several years ago for Texas Monthly magazine.

I’ve received challenge coins before, but nothing quite like this. I was thoroughly blown away, this is something I will always treasure.

Thanks, Adam you truly made my day!

Today may have been rainy and a little dreary, but there was a bright spot here at home! My new World War I reproduction French ARS gas mask from FrogSacks just arrived, and I couldn’t be more pleased.

If you’re not familiar with them, FrogSacks is known for high-quality militaria, excellent reproductions, top-notch blanks, and plenty of other unique items. They truly do fantastic work, and I highly recommend checking them out at FrogSacks.com.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a new piece of history to explore!

April 10, 1912. Cherbourg, France. A young Haitian engineer boards the world's most luxurious ship with his pregnant French wife and two small daughters, escaping a France that refuses to see past his skin color. Four days later, as the Titanic begins its fatal plunge into the Atlantic, he empties his pockets into his wife's coat and promises her something he knows is a lie. For over a century, the world told and retold the Titanic disaster without mentioning him. The musicians who played on. The wealthy elites in their finery. The heroic officers. But the story of Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche, the sole Black passenger aboard that doomed vessel, was deliberately buried. He had graduated with an engineering degree in France, spoke three languages, came from Haitian aristocracy. Yet racism blocked every door. When his uncle offered him a mathematics professorship back in Haiti, Joseph saw salvation. His mother bought them tickets on La France, but Joseph switched to the Titanic because that ship allowed children to dine with their parents. That decision sealed his fate. In the freezing chaos of that April night, he loaded his family into a lifeboat, filled Juliette's pockets with everything valuable he owned, and watched them descend toward the black water. His body was never found. His widow gave birth to their son eight months later and named him Joseph. She never spoke of the Titanic again. His story vanished until the 1990s when a descendant found his photograph and began asking questions.
