Contra dance has roots in English folk dance and has evolved into a delightful community dance tradition for beginners and experienced dancers alike. Every dance is taught by a "caller" who walks you through the various moves (in lines, circles or squares). The live music is primarily jigs and reels with a variety of influences including Irish, New England, Appalachian, and French-Canadian, ( and

almost always with a fiddle). You don't need a partner, in fact, everyone is encouraged to dance with others and meet new people. Lightweight clothing and a filled water bottle are also recommended. There is a beginner's workshop before each dance at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Dancer:
June has arrived. It's bittersweet to be reminded of all the things we would normally be doing to prepare for Dance Trance and the arrival of dancers and musicians from near & far.

There are still many things we can do to support traditional dance and music, though! I'm writing to remind you that with the decision to cancel Dance Trance, our Board established a special fund in support of the Dance Trance 2020 talent impacted by the pandemic. The deadline for contributions is June 12, 2020. We've received 15 donations thus far. Please consider contributing - 100% of your donation will go to Wild Rumpus, Hot Coffee Breakdown, Callers -Dugan Murphy and Joe Wilkie, and Sound Engineer -Tony Hernandez.

Out of concern for our community and in an effort to prevent spread of the corona virus (COVID-19), Lexington Traditional Dance Association is canceling the Friday March 13 2020 dance and suspending our dances until further notice.
We are hopeful that Dance Trance will go on as planned, but will make a determination within the next two months.
