Contra dance has roots in English folk dance and has evolved into a delightful community dance tradition for beginners and experienced dancers alike. Every dance is taught by a "caller" who walks you through the various moves (in lines, circles or squares). The live music is primarily jigs and reels with a variety of influences including Irish, New England, Appalachian, and French-Canadian, ( and almost always with a fiddle). You don't need a partner, in fact, everyone is encouraged to dance with others and meet new people. Lightweight clothing and a filled water bottle are also recommended. There is a beginner's workshop before each dance at 7:30 p.m.
